Upgrade domain name

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello guys!

So a couple of years ago I had a personal blog that I upgraded to .com. I paid 18 dollars for one year and had no complications. Right now I am creating a blog for a project I am doing, and I want to upgrade the domain to .com. When I try to pay it says I have selected wordpress premium, and I have to pay $99. I have no idea why, I cant simply change the domain anymore, I have to buy the entire package. Why?

    Kind regards,
    Adam

  • Hi Adam –

From this account you can register a custom domain through our WordPress.com Personal Plan for $35.88/year.

I’m happy to answer any follow up questions.

I have 3 sites on the free plan- xxx.wordpress.com, yyy.wordpress.com. and
zzz.wordpress.com. If i upgrade to Personal ($36/yr) do all of my sites
get their own name without the “wordpress”– like xxx.com, yyy.com, and
zzz.com– or only one site gets to have its own name like xxx.com
while the other two sites remain yyy.wordpress.com, zzz.wordpress.com???

I already have a registered domain name and site is on the web. Aaaa.org
What do i need to do to have my wordpress url be Aaaa.org ??
Can i shut down the present site, and use that name for my wordpress blog, so that the url Aaaa.org brings people to my wordpress blog instead of to where it is now?

    thanks.

  • Hi –

The WordPress.com Personal Plan would only apply to one of your sites. This plan comes with a free domain credit. This credit can be used to register a new custom domain or to map an existing domain.

In your situation, you would use that free domain credit towards mapping Aaaa.org to your account. Changing the name servers on your domain will tell the internet to load your WordPress.com version of the site.

I do not suggest cancelling Aaaa.org as this can result in loss of ownership. When you cancel a domain, it eventually becomes available for purchase again, and it is possible that someone else will purchase the domain before you.
