How do I upgrade dashboard so that I can change to a new theme?

The fine people at WordPress.com upgrade the dashboard automatically. To activate a theme, visit Appearance -> Themes from your dashboard. Also, please make sure to view the theme documentation for additional details.
Are you trying to purchase a premium theme or upgrade your WordPress.com membership?

I’m trying to upgrade my theme to customizr. When I check my dashboard (appearance->themes) that theme is not available (it doesn’t show when I seach for it. So I take it my dashboard does not automatically upgrade/update? -
Your Dashboard automatically updates to all the themes available, however you are limited to the about 220 themes you see from your Dashboard, you can’t install third party themes, the themes here are highly modified to run at WordPress.COM

As I understand it the difference from .com and .org of wordpress is where your website is hosted?
The customizr theme is available here: http://wordpress.org/themes/customizr – I see it says .org…
When my site is hosted at wordpress.com (as I understand it), then that theme is no longer availible? -
There are a few more differences between WordPress.org and WordPress.com other than hosting. The specific differences between the two can be seen on the WordPress.com and WordPress.org page.
In this case, the most important is knowing that the only themes you can use on a free hosted WordPress.com blog are those found in Appearance->Themes from your dashboard. You can also find all WordPress.com themes using the theme showcase page. Any themes you find on the Themes Directory for WordPress.org will require a self hosted version of WordPress.

Guess I will have to have the website hosted on a different server then to get the themes form wordpress.org. -
