hi team, I plan to upgrade plan and i’ve few questions in mind.
right now i have my own domain hosted in domain provider and my hosting provider separately.
I’m interested to use wordpress since it’s easy setup, so if i just want to map my domain only to wordpress without affecting my email setup. is it possible? I understand that I have to update dns in domain provider. but do i have to configure the DNS for my email in hosting provider too?
i just want to make sure before i do the domain mapping. I just leave my email setup in my hosting provider.

    please kindly advice.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Yes.

    How domain mapping works
Registering an underlying .wordpress.com URL first is required for domain mapping. What domain mapping does is providing a seamless redirect to the very same content under the new domain URL when a person clicks the old URL .wordpress.com to the original content. It can take up to 72 hours for domain propagation to take place throughout the internet but it doesn’t usually take that long. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
There are 3 ways to add a custom domain to your blog. Please note that an active WordPress.com plan is required to add a custom domain to your site. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#getting-started

WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/ The domain or mapping of any existing domain URL is included in the pricing for a personal upgrade, a premium and a business upgrade. The WordPress.COM upgrade for mapping a domain must be renewed annually.

WordPress.com does not provide an email service for blogs on their sub domains or on custom domains. Please see these support docs
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-email/
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/email-forwarding/

Please go to https://wordpress.com/pricing/ to upgrade.

    Hi,

just to clarify…so I must update wordpress dos record into my domain provider. also i’ve to update my hosting provider A, CNAME, & MX record into wordpress dashboard. am i understand correctly?

  • Hi there,

You are correct. You’ll need to add all the DNS records required by your email provider to the domain on our end, to ensure the email continues to work once you point the domain here.

The best order in which to do things are as follows:

    1) If you have any content on your existing site which you need to import to WordPress.com, do that first. Once you switch the domain you’ll lose access to your self-hosted site, and you won’t be able to export or correctly import content any more.

    https://transferto.wordpress.com/

If it’s a self-hosted WordPress site and you have Jetpack followers or stats to import, let us know at this point to help with that.

    2) Add a plan and domain mapping upgrade to your site here. You can purchase a plan from My Site ->Plans, and then add domain mapping as described at the link @timethief provided above.

    3) Add the required DNS records to the domain at My Site ->Domains. You’ll see a message that the DNS won’t work as the name servers are not pointed here. Ignore that and just add the records you need.

    Add Email

    4) Switch the domain’s name servers over to WordPress.com via your domain provider.

    And that should be it.
