upgrade & pointing a subdomain/domain to the wordpress site

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
I have a domain named ‘xyzDomain.com’ registered with another domain service provider (i.e not with or through wordpress account).
    I have a wordpress blog account ABCblog.wordpress.com
    I’d like to do this.

    1. Create 2 new wordpress blog sites/accounts for 2 different industry verticals so the articles are relevant to those industries:
    – ABCblogIndustryVertical1
    – ABCblogIndustryVertical2

    2. I want to link my domain/subdomain so the user flow is as mentioned below:
    – If the user enters this URL, ‘IndustryVertical1.xyzDomain.com’, it takes them to the first wordpress blog site.
    – If the user enters this URL, ‘IndustryVertical2.xyzDomain.com’, it takes them to the second wordpress blog site.

Can you please help me with the following:
    1. What wordpress plans should I upgrade to for both the sites to be able to do this? Personal or premium?
    2. Whats specific steps I need to take including instructions to the domain service provider so I can accomplish the user flow described above.
    Thanks in advance
    K

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Okay – what it sounds like you want to do is to use different subdomains of the domain you already own (hosted elsewhere), each pointing to a separate site hosted here at WordPress.com.

To do this you would create:

subdomain1.domain.com and point it to WordPress.com site 1

    and

subdomain2.domain.com and point it to WordPress.com site 2

Am I correctly understanding what you are wanting to accomplish?

If so, each site will need a plan of its own. This can be accomplished with a personal plan on each site using the directions for mapping a subdomain when the domain is registered elsewhere.

The premium plan would work as well and opens up more theme options, has more included storage space, and gives you the ability to use custom CSS on your site. The premium plan also gives you the ability to host video content, use the Simple Payments options, and the ability to apply to use the WordAds program. Whether you choose this plan over the personal really depends on what you want from your site.

Take a look at the subdomain mapping instructions linked above for the steps involved and feel free to drop back in here with any questions or clarifications. We are happy to help!

  • Hi there,

This can be accomplished with any of our upgraded plans. For that, you’ll need to purchase one plan per site. Then you can use the domain credit included in the plan to map your subdomain to each site. Detailed instructions for subdomain mapping can be found here:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-subdomain/#scenario2

Please let me know if you need additional help with that.

    Hi,
Thank you. I upgraded to premium plan. I made the changes on the registrar/provider elsewhere.
I then followed the instructions from the link that you had provided above for making the changes at the wordpress side.
When I clicked “Add Domain”, I entered predictivepioneers.com. Should I add “healthcare.predictivepioneers.com” or just “predictivepioneers.com” here. Can you please clarify.
If it should be “healthcare.predictivepioneers.com”, can you please help me change it. It doesn’t let me modify.
    Thank you

  • It should be the actual subdomain you want to use, yes. I’ve updated that for you, but it doesn’t look like you have a CNAME record to point that subdomain to us yet.

Please check you DNS at Google Domains, and make sure you have a CNAME added for healthcare.predictivepioneers.com that has the alias/points to predictivepioneers.wordpress.com, and remove any other CNAME records you might have set for that same subdomain.

    Hi,
Thank you. I updated one of their synthetic records for subdomain forwarding. I didn’t explicitly ask for CNAME update as you had mentioned but just enquired about the end functionality and they asked me to update this synthetic record to achieve this.
I have reached out to them again with the specific instruction on CNAME update mentioned on your support link.
I have a question related to that. Assuming everything works at the end, if I enter my URL subdomain1.domain.com, would the URL text change on the browser to domain.wordpress.com or would it be the same that I typed i.e (subdomain1.domain.com).?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Please ignore my previous message. There was some miscommunication and it didn’t work initially. I was able to resolve it.
    I am good now.
    Thank you

  • I’m glad you resolved that! Let us know if you need help with anything else :)
