  Hi. I’m considering upgrading to a Personal plan and would like to ask a few questions before I take the plunge.

  1. How long does the current Spring 30% discount end?

  2. My current domain is tonyhuby.wordpress.com. Will I be able to change it to tonyhuby.com? Is this available?

  3. Is the change automatic and how long does it take to change?

  4. How will my follows know it has changed?

  5. My current tonyhuby.wordpress.com domain is logged with a few websites. If it changes, will those links be diverted to the new domain?

  6. If at the end of my first paid year, I am not in a position to renew, what will happen to my blog? Will the domain return to tonyhuby.wordpress.com, and how will my followers know?

  Hi there,

  1. How long does the current Spring 30% discount end?

  This promotion only runs until this coming weekend.

  2. My current domain is tonyhuby.wordpress.com. Will I be able to change it to tonyhuby.com? Is this available?

  Your plan will allow you to register any available domain with an extension we offer, yes. To check if the specific one you want is available, go to My Site ->Domains ->Add and search for the domain. If it’s available, that screen will tell you. It does look like tonyhuby.com is not currently registered, though.

  3. Is the change automatic and how long does it take to change?

  Once you add a domain the change is instant. The moment the domain is registered we make it the primary domain on your site, and people visiting your site will see that domain instead of your free address.

  4. How will my follows know it has changed?

  They won’t, unless they pay attention to the domain that appears in their browser’s address bar. But they also don’t have to know because…

  5. My current tonyhuby.wordpress.com domain is logged with a few websites. If it changes, will those links be diverted to the new domain?

  …the free address for your site will still continue to exist, and all existing links that have already been shared online will continue working. We automatically redirect it to whatever domain is set as the primary domain on your site.

  6. If at the end of my first paid year, I am not in a position to renew, what will happen to my blog? Will the domain return to tonyhuby.wordpress.com, and how will my followers know?

  Your site will just go back to using the free address, yes, and again it shouldn’t affect your subscribers in any way. However, in this case we will not redirect links you shared while you had the custom domain back to the free domain, as we’ll no longer have control over the custom domain to do that.

  I should also mention that changing a domain has an impact on traffic – search engines will need to re-index your site at the new address, so you will notice a dip in the amount of traffic coming to your site from search engines for a few weeks while this process takes place. However, once your site is re-indexed, traffic should return to normal.
