Upgrading to any plan on WordPress.com totally depends on your use and what you are expecting.

If you just want a normal blog with custom domain name, go with the Personal plan. If you want advanced design customization along with large storage space (13GB) and Videos support, go for the Premium plan. Else if you want advanced SEO options along with unlimited premium themes and storage space, then go for the Business plan.

No one will be forcing you to upgrade – It is you who must understand what your needs are and then if needed upgrade to a better plan.

Thank you Tony, I don’t need much space, just a page to update my Fern list on. The free one might do the job, but i was wondering if that would be sufficient for people to google it.

Yeah, the free one would be sufficient but I would recommend you to go for the Personal plan so that you can get a free custom domain name (like my website.com) and also you’ll be able to get rid off the WordPress.com ads in your site.

Have a look at WordPress.com Widgets support document to learn how to add/remove Widgets.
