Upgrade question

    Hi,

I’ve been recommended WordPress as a way of rebuilding my website more successfully.

I’ve just signed up and found that there’s an upgrade for $99. however, that price includes registering a domain name and web hosting for a year. I have already registered the domain name I want to use (I’ve only just renewed it for two years) and I already have a hosting account.

Is there a way of upgrading to the website builder without paying for two things I already have?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Yes. All upgrades here are offered individually. See here:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/upgrades/

WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers. What is possible is purchasing an annually renewable $13. per year domain mapping upgrade to map to an existing domain.

In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from. If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.

See here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

So I have to pay a yearly fee to WordPress so that I can use a web domain I’ve already paid for, another yearly fee to WP so that I can use hosting I’m paying someone else for, all on top of a yearly fee for the software to build my site with, plus other yearly fees for the plug ins that I might want to use too?

If and only if you want to map to your domain from your free hosted WordPress.com blog yes you do have to pay for a domain mapping upgrade every year.

There is no FTP access and no blogger installed plugin capacity of free hosted WordPress.com blogs.

The upgrades offered by WordPress.COM are only available for purchase by those who have free hosted WordPress.COM blogs and no others.

First of all, I didn’t want to link to my website from a blog hosted anywhere. I only signed up for a blog so that I could get the website builder software. If that was incorrect, then fair enough, I’ll sling my hook.

I’m not asking for ftp access to a wordpress hosted blog. I’m only asking for access to the website builder software and one or two plug ins that I have been told will be useful.

I don’t expect to get access useful software for free, I expect to pay for it. What I didn’t expect to pay for was a domain name and site hosting that I was never going to use, nor for a link to the domain name that I’ve already paid for.

Pardon me if I’ve got the wrong end of the stick here, but what I’m looking for is to be able to buy some software, use it to build a website that I’m hosting elsewhere, and use one or two plug ins to help me in my quest.

If that’s possible with WordPress, then all I’d like to know is where and how.

If it’s not, please pardon my intrusion and I shall seek help elsewhere. :)

I believe you are posting to the wrong support forum. We provide support only for free hosted WordPress.COM blogs being hosted right here on this multiuser blogging platform.

WordPress.com and WordPress.org have different log-ins and run different versions of themes with same names. If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.

What is your web hosting service? You should be able to login to the control panel and install WP as a script. That script installation is the WordPress.ORG version of the WP software, and you can use it as a content management system on your existing site. It is free!
