    If I upgrade my site to use a custom URL (purchased through the upgrade to the paid WordPress plan), will the old WordPress URL automatically redirect to the new custom URL?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

    Yes it will. And if you ever decided not to renew your upgrade the free site would still exist. although you may lose some customization that you were able to do with a paid plan.
