upgrade site status

  • Unknown's avatar

i wanted to add an email address and domain name for the above site (to add the mailer lite plug-in we need to be able to authenticate our own individual domain name apparently) plus be allowed to add/purchase plug-ins if required. I stopped because it looks like i will have to pay 5,000 INR per year for this facility which now makes my site seem expensive. Is this correct or have I missed something along the way?

    Thanks

Hi there, In order to install 3rd party plugins on a WordPress.com website, you’d need to upgrade your site to either the Business or eCommerce plans.

Hope that answers your question, but post back here if you need more info.

Thanks jennifer, I just dont think its fair that even after you have paid for your hosting account that you are then held ransom to pay even more hosting just to be able to then pay a third party provider for a plug-in (ok some are offered free but they are just hooks to get u to purchase the version that does the real deal)

Just airing my opinion and seems to be the opinion of other hosting companies also i.e once you have a paid account you are free to do what ever you want with that account and contract any third party vendor you choose.

Here is Godaddy india link who offer wordpress hosting at a much better deal than wordpress? So why try to tell wordpress they got it wrong on this, better to just move the site over before getting domain name registered and emails setup etc.

Who knows what other services will become chargeable from wordpress in the future? Slower site connections unless on business? less visibility on search engines? Buggy template versions? It could be anything really because what you guys are doing is sending out the wrong message to people with this kind of pricing strategy.

Hello again, Rob. Let me mention that WordPress comes in 2 flavors:

First flavor: WordPress.com (where we are ) is a platform that hosts WordPress sites, powered by Automattic. You can host your free, basic site here or upgrade to add features to it. WordPress.com does not charge for hosting or bandwidth, only for additional features. Regardless of plan, all back-end technical, security and software updates are taken care of for us by WordPress.com.

Because WordPress.com sites are on a shared environment, site owners wishing to install plugins or upload 3rd party themes or use custom code are separated and moved to their own servers. That is only available under the Business or eCommerce plan.

If you want to have a custom domain with email, that is definitely doable, also with the Personal plan. All upgrade plans include a custom domain (included at no cost for the first year) or the ability to map a domain you already own. Depending on upgrade plan, email forwarding is available or if you need full email hosting, you can set up with any of the providers mentioned here: https://wordpress.com/support/add-email/

A MailerLite subscription form is available for your WordPress.com site as a widget. You can learn more about this here: https://wordpress.com/support/widgets/mailerlite/

Second flavor: WordPress.org is a community where people work on the open source WordPress software. It’s also where that software can be downloaded to be run on your own web server. You can read more about these differences at
    https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

You may find that your needs are better suited to hosting the open source WordPress software on 3rd party hosting. You can find recommended web hosts at https://get.wp.com/

    Hope that helped. Best wishes.
