Upgrade to Business, then Downgrade to Free – Retain files?
-
I have a site with a Free plan. If I upgrade to the Business plan for 1 month, then downgrade to Free, will my site retain the small 1k text file and folder I uploaded when I was on the business plan?
One other question: Is it possible while on the Business plan to create a .hidden folder for site verification within my site’s root directory? (For example, at example.wordpress.com/.hidden/file.txt) – and would this file be retained if I downgraded?
WP.com: Yes

Hi there!
Is it possible while on the Business plan to create a .hidden folder for site verification within my site’s root directory? (For example, at example.wordpress.com/.hidden/file.txt) – and would this file be retained if I downgraded?
With the WordPress.com Business plan, you can activate hosting features (it is auto-activated if you upload a theme or install a plugin). Doing so will let you access your site via SFTP, which will let you create files manually using an FTP client.
However, anything you add this way will be removed if you downgrade from the Business plan, as your site will go through some behind-the-scene changes. You can learn more about what happens when you cancel/downgrade from a plugin-enabled site: https://wordpress.com/support/manage-purchases/#plugin-enabled-sites
Can you tell us exactly what you’re trying to achieve? There may be other ways to do what you’re trying, and we can help if you tell us more about the context behind uploading this file.
Thanks!
