Upgrade to Personal or buy my own domain elsewhere?

    Hello. I want to remove the .wordpress on my domain. Should I upgrade to Personal ($2.99/mo) or just purchased elsewhere like Namecheap.com? Thanks..

    Howdy shadesofwanderer!
    One’s you purchase a Personal Plan , you will have credit to either Register a New Domain or Map Your Existing Domain, so if you haven’t purchased your Domain you can just register it here, you don’t have to pay for it, it is included in your Plan.
    One’s you purchase your Plan you can then use this guide to Register New Domain

    The domain credit included with the plan can be used to register a new domain:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/register-domain/

    If you decide to purchase the domain elsewhere, you can ‘map’ it to your WordPress.com site with domain mapping:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

    In this case, you can use the domain credit in the plan for domain mapping instead.

    Registering the domain through us would mean both your site and domain are together in one place. But if you would rather register the domain elsewhere, you can still use it on your WordPress.com site.

    Thanks a lot pavanraheja and gemmacevans. I know the difference now.. :)

    But which of the two (2) is easier, less hassle and at the same time affordable? Get a plan straight from WordPress, or just get a domain and host somewhere and then install WordPress? TIA..

    If you decide to setup WordPress.org on your own hosting, the cost will vary depending on the hosting provider you choose. Our plans include a domain and hosting so there is no separate cost for that.
