Upgrade to Personal plan question

Hello, I have a quick question regarding upgrading to the personal plan. I’m thinking of upgrading to remove the .wordpress from my url, and I’m wonder if I do when people try to visit the original url willl they be redirected to new url? (e.g say my current url is ‘example.wordpress.com’ and I upgrade to make it ‘example.com’ will they be sent to the same site should they use the original ‘example.wordpress.com’?)
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

no worries,
once you upgrade, your followers will be sent to your site even with the new url. it is automatically set up that you would be redirected if you type in the old url.
