"upgrade unavailable" for guided transfer. Why is this?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am trying to migrate my blog from wordpress.com to wordpress.org using the guided transfer and it says the upgrade isn’t available. I want to pay for WordPress to help me move my content over. Why can’t I do it? And how can I move to WordPress.org?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Jessica,

Since Premium themes are only available for use on WordPress.com, the Store will tell you that the Guided Transfer option is unavailable if you have a Premium theme installed (which you do: Duet).

If you’d like, I can remove the Premium theme from your account. After that, you should be able to purchase a Guided Transfer. :)

If you’d like to keep using the Duet theme after you move to a WordPress.org installation, you will need to re-purchase it directly from The Theme Foundry, which is here:

    http://thethemefoundry.com/wordpress/duet/

Let me know what you’d like to do! Thanks!

    Hi Adam,

Ah! That makes sense. We knew we were going to lose Duet when we moved over, so yes, let’s remove the theme and purchase the guided transfer. I do want to know, though: does this all happen immediately? Or do we have some basic theme on our blog until the transfer takes place? Want to do this with as little front end wonky-ness as possible. Obviously we will need a new theme in WordPress.org, but I don’t want to change it until we’ve made the move. Thanks so much

  • Jessica,

I do want to know, though: does this all happen immediately? Or do we have some basic theme on our blog until the transfer takes place?

It happens quickly, but not quite immediately. :) Here’s how it goes:

    1) When you’re ready to purchase the Guided Transfer, let me know and I’ll remove Duet from your account. (You will still be able to use any of our free themes while waiting for the transfer of course.)

    2) You purchase the Guided Transfer from our store.

    3) Within one or two business days, we schedule the transfer with you. You will obviously need to purchase WordPress.org-compatible hosting and so forth (this will all be worked out with you after the purchase).

    4) We transfer your site and provide two weeks of support to “teach you how to fish” on your new WordPress.org site.

All in all, you’d only have to revert your WordPress.com site to a free theme for a few days while the transfer was being worked out. :)

Let me know when you’re ready and I’ll go ahead and remove Duet. After that, you can use any free theme you’d like up until the transfer takes place.

    Thanks!

    Hi Adam,

Gotcha, thanks so much. This all sounds good to me but I have one more question before we remove duet and I buy the transfer: we have our domain name through GoDaddy.com. We will keep it, correct? And can pay them to host iloveineed through WordPress.org there?

  • we have our domain name through GoDaddy.com. We will keep it, correct?

I’m showing that you actually have your domain (iloveineedblog.com) registered with us here at WordPress.com.

But yes, you will keep it. After the move, however, you will probably need to update the name servers to point to your new host. Doing that is detailed here:

    Change a Domain’s Name Servers

You’ll need to obtain the name server values from your new host beforehand. You should be able to find them on their support documentation, or contact them and ask for the information. (Name servers may be referred as “nameservers” or “NS records” instead.)

And can pay them to host iloveineed through WordPress.org there?

GoDaddy does provide hosting, yes. However, you may also want to consider some of the hosts recommended over at WordPress.org:

    Hosting

Ultimately, it’s up to you though! :)

Whoops! Sorry about that–so before we do the guided transfer, we should figure out who we want to host the blog on wordpress.org and get their name server values? And then would our wordpress.com contact be able to help us update the name serving?

  • so before we do the guided transfer, we should figure out who we want to host the blog on wordpress.org and get their name server values?

Getting their name servers won’t be necessary this early on, I’d just concentrate on finding a good host before purchasing the Guided Transfer.

And then would our wordpress.com contact be able to help us update the name serving?

Since your domain is registered with us, you can do this yourself by following the guide I linked to in my last response, but we can help with this if need be. :)

    Thanks!

Okay! Last question (I promise): once we find a new host we like, we don’t have to buy anything from them yet, correct? We should just wait till we start the guided transfer to get going with the new host?

Thank you again for all of your help!

  • once we find a new host we like, we don’t have to buy anything from them yet, correct? We should just wait till we start the guided transfer to get going with the new host?

You can do either really. I would suggest waiting though, as our Guided Transfer folks will probably recommend some hosts (likely the same ones I linked you to earlier).

    Cheers!

Awesome, thanks again so much for all of your help. I’m going to regroup, find a host I think I want to use and then can I just e-mail you on this chain when we’re ready to pull Duet off and buy the guided transfer? It’ll be Monday, most likely.

  • Jessica,

Yep, just go ahead and respond here when you’re ready to proceed. I’ll remove Duet and you’ll be able to buy Guided Transfer straight away.

    Thanks! :)

Awesome!! Have a good weekend and thanks so much for walking me through this.

  • Not a problem! :) Have an awesome weekend yourself!

Hi Adam! We’re ready to finally migrate to wordpress.org. Would someone be able to help us with this? I know we have to pull off Duet, but not sure what the next steps are. Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi! Just wanted to follow up with this. Thanks in advance for the help in removing Duet and getting us started with the Guided Transfer!

  • Jessica,

So it turns out I gave you some wrong information before: you actually *can* purchase a Guided Transfer even if you have a Premium Theme. However, the trick is that the Premium Theme cannot be active (or else the GT purchase won’t work). It seems you’ve deactivated Duet, which is why you were able to purchase a Guided Transfer.

Now that that’s done, one of our Guided Transfer folks will reach out to you in a day or so with all the details of how that process works.

Let me know if there’s anything else I can help with! :) Thanks!
