Upgrade your plan to remove the banner

This banner has suddenly appeared on my site after 12 1/2 years:
“Upgrade your plan to remove the banner and unlock more features, from £3/month”I don’t know about anyone else but I find the wording tantemount to extortion. If I wanted to upgrade I would have but I don’t, so why is WordPress pressuring me and other users this way, expecting us to pay get rid of an intrusive banner? Is this even legal?

I see “Design a site like this at WordPress.com” at the top of your site.
Yes, sad but true, it is legal. By building a free site you accept the Terms of Conditions, one of which states that WordPress.com will place adverts on free sites. There is no such thing as a free lunch and as a free user I continue to be grateful that I continue to have a place on the Interweb at no cost.

Here’s a screenshot of what I see. I guess the message is different for site owners as it is for visitors. Worst thing is I can’t even hide it with adblocker either…

The same thing is happening on both of my own blogs! It’s extremely distracting, annoying, and ugly. If I wanted to upgrade, I know perfectly well how to do so and don’t need a constant reminder.

baryshnitsa – Glad it is not just me. I get WP wanting to up their subscriber numbers but I resent being essentially blackmailed into removing the banner which is the legality I questioned in my original post.
Plus, the lack of official response from the so-called “Happiness Agents” is noticeably defeaning… -

Just got this reply on Twitter from the WordPress account. Notice how they simply parrot the obvious and don’t address the issue of making us pay to remove the banner.

I noticed that the banner is obscuring part of the header/menu in some of our older themes. This is affecting your site and yes, it is a bug. At no point did we intend to interfere with your content.
The bug should be fixed soon but in the meantime, I have added a Personal plan to your site, free of charge. and removed the banner. The plan is free of charge and valid for one year. Please feel free to let it expire after a year if you no longer want it.

Thank you! I appreciate your attention to this matter and the bonus plan. I’m just glad WordPress wasn’t starting to get heavy about upgrades and I would wake up for a horse’s head in my bed! :-P
