Upgraded but now considering WordPress.org
-
I just purchased the upgrade to customize my WordPress.com site and purchased a domain name. However, I have discovered that the upgrade doesn’t offer as much flexibility as I would like. I am considering moving the site to the .org side, but unsure how this will work with my recent upgrade. Do I get a refund of the $99? and just pay for the domain name? I am considering using DreamHost as the
hosting site.Thanks for your help.

Hi there! You can certainly split up the Premium upgrade and cancel those services you no longer want. You can retain the $18 domain registration/mapping, and $8 private registration if you wish.
You can do this by clicking on Store → My Upgrades in your site’s Dashboard. Click to cancel your Premium plan, and this will unbundle all of the upgrades to your account.
Because domains cannot be transferred for 60 days after registration, you can launch a self-hosted site at DreamHost and map it to your domain that is registered here at WordPress.com. Once those 60-days is over, we encourage you to transfer your domain registration to your host, if possible, so you can keep all your site’s management in one place.
Please let me know if I can help you with anything. All the best.

Thank you for your response.
I unbundled the upgrades already and I have started a host account at DreamHost. If I am mapping the registered domain from DreamHost to WordPress.com, does that mean that all modifications must be done at WordPress.com until the 60 days are up?
Or do I need to transfer everything to the wordpress.org in order to do the customizations?
Thanks for being patient with my ignorance.

Terrific! Glad you were able to unbundle the upgrades. I see that you were also refunded the amount of the Premium upgrade, minus the domain registration/mapping/privacy.

You can create your entire site at DreamHost, and when you’re ready, you can map your website to your domain name here at WordPress.com. Basically, your site will sit on DreamHost’s servers, and your website’s name will reside here. You can change your name servers here so your domain name “points” to your website at DreamHost.
Here are those instructions:

Nothing has to be transferred to WordPress.org. You will need to install WordPress on your DreamHost server before you can start customizing your site:
http://wiki.dreamhost.com/WordPress_InstallDreamHost can certainly help you with that, or you can contact support at WordPress.org/support/.
Any other questions? Please let me know!
