  If I begin with a free blog can I upgrade later if need be and not lose archived material?

  You can switch between plans pretty easily, the one thing you might have to be wary of is if you downgrade to the free plan when you have more than is allowed in your media library. I’d suggest making sure you have less than the maximum amount of data on the free plan before doing that. Similarly, you would lose access to video file hosting and I assume that would mean your previously uploaded videos too (but I’m not sure of that).
