I’ve been teaching myself for 2 weeks and I have a good amount of work done, but I need help tweeking or maybe finding a new template that’s better then tweaking then launching.

Is there anyone live I can chat with? Thank you!!!!!!!!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

how to connect and make my site live

So the site is live (by default) right now at https://phlpets.wordpress.com.

If you’d like to set it to private while you work on it, you can do that from My Site > Settings. Just look for the Privacy section and click the bubble next to Private. Finally, use the blue Save Changes button to apply the setting.

We have some more information about how these settings work here:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

If you’re looking to connect a domain to your site, you’ll first want to choose one of the paid plans. Once you do that, you’ll be able to connect a domain you already own, or register a brand new domain.

if I can change themes to to others but not lose the content that I customized in a certain theme in case I want to go back to it

Yep, you can definitely change themes whenever you like. You can do that from My Site > Themes. Content like Posts, Pages, Portfolio Items, Comments, Testimonials, and uploaded files won’t be lost. Those things are all saved regardless of which theme you use.

Sometimes switching to a new theme will move some of your widgets to the Inactive Widgets area within the Appearance > Widgets section of the Dashboard. The widgets will retain their prior content/settings, and it’s pretty quick to go in and assign them to the widget areas made available by the new theme.

    how to authorize instagram

Sure, so the steps in the Instagram Widget guide should work as long as they’re followed exactly as they are written.

If they don’t work initially, I’d recommend removing the widget, clearing your browser cache, logging into Instagram in a new tab of the same browser, and starting over with the steps in the guide. If it doesn’t work, just let me know.

how to get my blog posts to go onto the blog section

It looks like you’ve sorted this out by setting your Blog page as the Posts Page from within the Customizer’s Static Front Page section.

Is there anyone live I can chat with?

Sure, so if you decide to upgrade, you’ll be able to live chat with WordPress.com staff. Keep in mind that plans are refundable within 30 days of purchase, though if you register a new domain, there is a 48 hour refund window for the domain.

Let me know if this helps.

re: Instagram widget set up and authorization

Make sure you are logged into Instagram when doing the Instagram widget set up. The Admin login link to the dashboard for every blog hosted by wordpress.COM is:

    http://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

    * You will have to replace “name_of_blog” with your actual blog’s name in that URL.

    http://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/widgets.php

Navigate to > Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets

    * You will have to replace “name_of_blog” with your actual blog’s name in that URL.

The Instagram widget allows you to display your latest Instagram photos in your site’s sidebar and the guide for setting up the only one that will work on a wordpress.COM hosted blog is here https://en.support.wordpress.com/instagram/instagram-widget/
    Also, note this support doc
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/#widget-visibility

Is your Instagram account public? Or is is private, and therefore, blocked when it comes to display of images in the widget on your blog? And, are you logged in when authorizing it?

This particular widget needs to be authorized using the WP admin widget page rather than the customizer. If you go to Dashboard > Appearance> Widgets from the WP Admin dashboard and authorize the widget from there, you’ll have much better luck. Interestingly enough, we’ve had some good success with it working in the Customizer more recently. However if for some reason it won’t work there, wp-admin is always available.

    Hi there,

    Pleased to meet you. :)

That part in bold lettering is primarily what I wanted to draw your attention to. Also note that some bloggers do not know they have to have a public Instagram account and be logged in when trying to authorize the widget.

@timethief: Likewise :) Thanks for all of your help.

Yep, it used to be that way for a time where the dashboard was a better way of activating the Instagram widget. I’ve helped people over in live chat recently who were able to successfully activate via the Customizer, so it should work fine there now. I just double checked it on a test site and it went smoothly. However, the steps in the guide do have to be followed exactly as written.

Ah, this post didn’t have any tags after I added my initial reply. That’s what you were referring to, right?

Yes. You will find that experienced Volunteers use tag search to keep updated on what’s working and what’s b0rked. :)

Great, thanks! I’ve started adding some as I’ve been working through threads today.

  • phlpets – how are you doing with your site setup? It’s looking good! Did you give Instagram authorization another shot or are you happy with the gallery widget instead? (Sweet animals!)

Also wanted to clarify one thing – even if your Instagram account is private, you should be able to connect it. Viewers will be able to see the small thumbnails in that case, but won’t be able to view the full-sized image. Of course that’s not ideal, so you’ll probably want to make sure your account is public if it’s not already.

Just let us know if you have any other questions, we’re here to help!

    Tx and noted.
