upgrading.

I’ve just tried to register a domain and upgrade with a personal plan for which I will pay. Somehow I now have extra sites on wordpress.com and not the example.com I searched for. If I cancel with 48hrs (I know I can but can’t find the way) I might blow the chance to keep the domain name I want. I’m just about tearing my hair out. I don’t seem to be able to get back to my single free site of bonzablogger.wordpress.com ; if I could, then I would start again. I’ve got to get some sleep. Maybe there will be an answer for me tomorrow. I know domain name I want to buy but just can’t get there. The site will be a totally different topic to my current free site with WordPress. Please, can someone find me a large bandaid to fix this? Thanks in hopeful anticipation.

  • Hi there,

What domain did you buy? The account you’re using to post here does not own any domains or upgrade plans on WordPress.com, only five free sites, including https://bonzablogger.wordpress.com/

If you want to upgrade an existing site in your account, click on My Sites ->Switch Site and select the site you want to upgrade. Then click on Plans and select the upgrade plan you want. After buying the plan, go to My Site ->Domains to claim your free domain.

Hi Kokkieh. I didn’t finish buying the domain. In each of the 4 latter sites I stopped the process just before payment as it showed the domain still had wordpress.com attached.

I figured I’d done something wrong and retried as you can see, without success. I think the order in which I’ve done this is incorrect or not followed through properly by me. I thought I was being very careful.

bonzablogger.wordpress.com is the free blog that I want to keep, the others below are ‘accidents’.

Based on what you, and Dave, have said, if I now switch to happychapels.wordpress.com (first accident) and upgrade the plan, claim the domain etc, I should finish with happychapels.com?

If this is the case I’ll be happy. But would you please advise me….

1/Does the wording in support advise that all visitors to the subdomains are redirected to the main site? This confuses me if the other sites were of a different name? I figured something was wrong here.

2/I’m going to follow through as above, but I wish to know whether I am able, allowed, to start a new site any time with a different email address? I got red lettered when I started to do this and felt like such a naughty chap. I have other family members who use this computer sometimes and one of them is going for a WordPress blog. Will there be problems?

Thanks for the help Kokkieh. I look forward to your advice and shortly I’ll try to finish what I started and put an end to this saga.

    Regards, Bruce Rouse

The free WordPress.com address does not go away. That address will exist for as long as your site exists. But if you register a custom domain it is laid over the free address, and the free address won’t be visible to visitors to your site. You need to complete the process before the custom domain can be created and applied to the site.

Based on what you, and Dave, have said, if I now switch to happychapels.wordpress.com (first accident) and upgrade the plan, claim the domain etc, I should finish with happychapels.com?

Correct, provided happychapels.com does not already belong to someone else and you’re able to register it.

1/Does the wording in support advise that all visitors to the subdomains are redirected to the main site?

I’m not sure what you mean here. If you have multiple domains on one site, all of them will redirect to whichever on you set as the primary domain for that site. If you have a free address and a custom domain, and the custom domain is set as primary, the WordPress.com address will redirect to the custom domain.

But each *.wordpress.com domain you own is a completely separate site. To redirect your other WordPress.com sites to one of the four, you’d need to buy a site redirect upgrade for every other site. Unless the other sites have existed for a while already and get a fair amount of traffic of their own, there’s no real reason to do this.

I wish to know whether I am able, allowed, to start a new site any time with a different email address?

To start a site with a different email address you’d need to create a completely new username account. So log out of your bonzablogger username and clear your browser cookies. Then go through the signup process to create a new username account, at its own email address, and create a new site in the new account.

This means that, depending which site you’re working on, you’ll need to log out of one account and into the other each time to get to the correct site.

Other options to make account switching easier is to use Firefox for one username and Chrome for the other, for example, or use the functionality built into both those browsers to have multiple user profiles in the browser itself. Then you switch your user profile in the browser, and that automatically has you logged into the correct WordPress.com account for that profile.

Thanks for covering my questions Kokkieh. I now know a little more and will read through the info a time or two more.

I completed creating the new site last night and luckily the domain I wanted was still there. It worried me that I would miss it. I was very close each time but confused by still seeing WordPress.com in the address chosen. Each time I withdrew it gave me a free site. The end of the creating process didn’t go as I thought it was supposed to.

Although it appears simple, I didn’t understand the redirection to primary domain bit. To me, that said more than one thing. Somewhere I must have missed a more simplistic description of how ‘my sites’ works. I like things spelled out in terms I’m familiar with.

If I have another custom domain in mind, the idea would be to buy it now. I understand that I can do this with WordPress as a Registrar?

Do I just delete the other accidental sites if I don’t want them?

  • You can add additional domains to your site at any time, yes. The first domain on a site has to be added as part of a plan, but thereafter you can buy additional domains for the site by going to My Sites ->Domains ->Add.

To delete the sites you don’t want, go to My Sites ->Switch Site and select the site you want to delete. Then click Settings. The Delete Site option is at the bottom. Please make sure you delete the correct site, as this cannot be reversed.

    Thanks Kokkieh

I think I’ve got it (famous last words).
Now I’m off to customise a theme to park on the site to which my domain directs visitors. The rain in Spain.

I appreciate your patience and direction. (And thanks again to Dave)
