Upgrading
-
Hi Guys,
I’m finally ready to upgrade, but I have a question about the custom url.
My hosting provider sells a wordpress package that enables a custom url, however your personal plan seems better and cheaper. (link to the package of my provider: https://www.hostnet.nl/website/wordpress-weblog?gclid=CKGe0d6H8NQCFY0V0wod4HoN9w)My question, is updrading to ‘personal’ better then what my hosting provider is offering? OR is it necessary to do both?
Please let me know!
Kind regards!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey there @ruudduivis,
If all you’re looking for is a custom URL for your WordPress.com site then upgrading to any of the WordPress.com plans should suit your needs just fine. Any upgrade comes with one custom domain credit, which will allow you to use whichever custom URL you desire, as long as its available.
On the other hand, it looks like the site you’re referring to is selling a WordPress.org-based package, which would require transferring your site from ruudduivis.wordpress.com to a new host. WordPress.com is our own hosted version of WordPress.org– you can read more about the differences (and the features WordPress.com offers) here.”
Good luck and please let me know if you have any other questions.
All the best,

Hi there,
My question, is upgrading to ‘personal’ better then what my hosting provider is offering?
It really comes down to your personal preference and what you are looking for. This link explains the difference between WordPress.com and .org, but it also gives you some great information about WordPress.com’s features and benefits of hosting https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
With a Personal WordPress Plan, WordPress.com is your host. You can do this 3 different ways
1. Choose the Personal Plan and start fresh with a new custom URL https://en.support.wordpress.com/register-domain/
2. Use a Domain you already own: https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/
3.Map a sub-domain: https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-subdomain/
OR is it necessary to do both?
No, you do not need to do both.
Please let me know if you have any more questions :)

Thank you so much for your reply’s.
My domein is hosted by a dutch hosting provider, so hosting is covered.Last question: I also want to e-mail using my domainname, is this possible with the WordPress Personal plan? I’m not talking about a system, just an emailadress with my domainname.
Hope you guys can let me know!
Kind regards!

Hi there,
My domein is hosted by a dutch hosting provider, so hosting is covered
If you connect your domain to a site on WordPress.com, we will be your hosting provider. Hosting refers to where your site’s files are located, not to where your domain is registered.
If you buy a hosting package from another provider, your site will not be on WordPress.com, but instead you’ll be using the self-hosted version of WordPress, called WordPress.org. That’s something completely different from WordPress.com, and you cannot buy our plans for a self-hosted WordPress site. There is no connection at all between a WordPress hosting plan somewhere else, and a site on WordPress.com. Please see here for the difference:
https://wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
Our plans only apply if you want to connect a domain you already own, to a site hosted on WordPress.com.
If you connect a domain to a site hosted on WordPress.com, you can also set up email at that domain. But the email account itself you’ll need to create with another provider, as we don’t offer email hosting. We only allow connecting an existing email account to a domain that’s hosted with us.
