Upgrading
-
Hello, I just started a blog very excited about it. Just wondering, when I was signing up it did say my site is available (michelledawnom.com) so that would mean if I got it, it would be through WordPress but would have the URL michelledawnom.com correct?
Also, if at some point I wanted to add a few items to sell on my blog, I can do that correct?
And, how do I upgrade now that I already skipped that step? And what does it cost and what is included besides the domain name or is that separate? Please get back thanks!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can ONLY sell things you yourself make, like art or books.
You can get a custom domain name for $5 and the domain mapping upgrade for $13 (both charges are per year and you need to pay both of them) by following these instructions http://en.support.wordpress.com/add-a-domain/
-
Thanks for the prompt reply! So if I don’t already have a domain but want to get that one, I would just be paying the $5/year?
Also this is a completely other topic but I was noticing while setting my blog up that I want to have separate pages I can post on (I was reading about the pages/categories issue and I get it sort of…) but instead of putting in categories I was hoping there’s a way to have separate pages i.e. one for nutrition and one for fitness, one for bio/contact, etc…. but it doesn’t seem to have that as an option? I just like it that way more of a site setup than just posting on the homepage only and having it in categories which isn’t as organized a look as I’d Like?
Thanks!

The domain is $5. per year but that is included in the $18. per year domain mapping upgrade. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

Among the most common misconceptions is that bloggers fail to understand is
(1) there is only one page we can post to in any blog and
(2) the static pages http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ they create do not automatically update.Only the dynamic pages like Categories, Tags and Archives created by the software when we publish a post we that we have assigned Categories and Tags too will update automatically update with new posts.
By default the front page of the blog is the post that displays all posts in your blog. Though there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts (not pages) http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/ and we cannot post to more than that one page, we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page.
We organize posts by assigning categories to them. You can create a custom menu and add the dynamic categories pages into the custom menu.

As I said above there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts (not pages) in any blog. http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/
The front page of the blog by default will display your posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top unless you change that by setting a static front page.
If you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, then you can create a static front page called for example “Welcome” for your site and a “Blog” page for posts.
To do that create two pages > http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ After you do that you go to > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”.

No. You would be paying $18 because a domain without domain mapping in place is useless.

Wow you guys are awesome thanks for all the detailed info I will def check out all those links. I definitely plan on registering the domain (which I’m assuming you can use elsewhere too or does it work like that? if you decide to open a site elsewhere for instance you still have that domain forever?)
The idea of the pages I just mean I would love to have it where you go to the homepage of the blog and can click one of the pages (i.e. “Nutrition”) and see all the blog posts made that were on that topic but I guess that’s more of a website than a blog (I’m a total noob just getting started on this now… clearly)…
-
I see that you can display posts on different pages (I still want them all to show up chronologically on the home page) just trying to figure it out
-
so if I pay to be able to customize my page (or can I do it as is now, without paying more?) I can make it look like I want? (If you check out my page now – michelledawnom.com, you can see how I want it with the 5 categories across the top, as I said I do want all the posts listed on the homepage like a regular blog, I just want to be able to separate it so it’s easier for people to find what they want i.e. an article on nutrition or one on fitness related topic….. I can do that through customization?

I already answered that here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/upgrading-13?replies=10#post-1295397 and here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/upgrading-13?replies=10#post-1295399

sorry the links don’t show exactly what part you’re referring to…. if I do this part

is that the part you’re referring to?? sorry just not sure what you mean thanks!!

Because I did try creating a custom menu and it took away the homepage so I wasn’t sure how to fix that
