Upgrading a viewer

  Trying to turn some viewers into contributors and authors. When I try to add them as new, the site tells me they are already viewers and will not let me add them. I cannot find any instructions for taking a current viewer and upgrading their status!

  Hi there, people who are Followers of your site cannot be “upgraded” to a user role. You will need to invite them specifically as a Contributor or Author. https://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/

  Right. But when I try to invite them the site gives me an error message saying ‘Jane Doe already has a role’ and will not let me issue the invite. Since her role is follower, and I want her to be an editor, that’s not working out.

  Please let us know whether you are using the Calypso dashboard or the WP Admin to try to send the invite and walk us through the steps you are taking?

  Thanks for the tag justjennifer.

  I’m able to add current followers as an author when I test it in the new editor. I tested it with usernames and email addresses, both worked ok for me.

  Try these steps.

  Click My Sites in the upper left corner.
  Then from the left, find People > Add > type the username in to the top box, select the role, customize the message, send.

  You should get a green little pop up letting you know the message was sent.
