Upgrading account and Wordads revenue

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m trying to plan and set goals for my blog. I want to eventually start getting some ad revenue, but that requires me moving to the premium plan which is $4 more a month. I don’t want to do that till I have enough traffic for the ads to cover that extra $4 or at least kinda close. Can somebody give me an estimate of how much traffic I should have to likely cover that extra $4 so I can plan when to upgrade?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi! Our docs for WordAds recommend getting in the thousands of visits per month to get meaningful revenue. I’m not sure how they qualify meaningful, but I’m guessing within the year you’ll easily cover a Premium plan. If possible, you might consider covering the full year (since that’s a discount and gets you live chat help) and then just aiming to earn that much in a year’s time – so you might start small and earn more later.

Also I can’t promise it would go like that, but based on the trends I see, I think you’d be okay.

Here are a few ways to build more traffic:

Basically avoid anything spammy, but do engage and find where people are looking for that content – it seems you’re doing that now and just starting to ramp up.

Also, if there are any particular niche biking products you love, you might also reach out to the sellers to see if you can sponsor a post about them or add an affiliate link, as that’s another way to earn. Reviews are a popular way to do that, especially if it’s something you love. The caveat is you’d need to just use links and images. Forms, iFrames, some embeds, and JavaScripts aren’t allowed on that plan because of potential security issues: http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/

Does that help? If not, send more details and we’ll go from there.

Hello. Thank you for the response. I had read all that stuff and it kinda left me confused. Like I imagine meaningful as being more than $4, but it’s impossible to know. I guess I was hoping somebody could throw out a rough number like if you have 1,000 views a month most blogs will bring in approximately ??? Seeing any revenue income would be really cool, but I don’t wanna jump up my plan if I’m not really that close to covering with revenue. Being frugal I want to plan it out. Hope that makes sense.

With 1000 views a month you’d be lucky to make $4 a year, depending where most of your site traffic comes from. With that amount of traffic you definitely won’t break even on a Premium Plan, so if ad revenue is your main reason for upgrading, I’d hold off for now, and focus on building your traffic first.

We have some tips for doing that at https://wordpress.com/support/getting-more-views-and-traffic/

By the way, I notice you still have the default Learn More button that came with your theme’s front page, linking to our getting started guide. You might want to consider removing that, or else linking it to your own About page instead. You can do that by editing your home page.

    Thanks. I fixed that link.

Sounds like I should holdout then till I have thousands a month. Searching I had seen it suggested that it may pay like $.01 per view. I also saw post suggesting less so wasn’t sure. Obviously there are lots of factors other than just the number of views. It seems like the premium plan mostly has revenue generation to offer. If there’s anything that would help with getting views I’d love to hear about it. I’ve read the link you shared, it’s helpful. And it’s more helpful now that I have gotten a better grasp on what I’m doing. Thanks.

  • It’s not a flat rate and depends on a lot of factors.

We use a real-time bidding system, so when a viewer loads your page, advertisers bid based on the site’s content and the viewer themselves (their location, advertising profile, etc).

That’s all done by algorithms in less than a second, the highest bidder gets the placement, and if no one bids, we run our own ads (which still pay out).

Overall, we recommend that you keep producing quality original content and follow the other recommendations at https://wordpress.com/support/getting-more-views-and-traffic/
