Upgrading accounts and transferring domains

Hi we’re making a new website for our church, and we want to use WordPress to host our domain, however our domain name is currently hosted on godaddy (valleyumc.org). We want to keep the old website up and running while we construct this one. We also want to upgrade our current account to access features like plugins and donate buttons. What would be the steps to upgrading, then transferring our godaddy domain name to WordPress without paying for two domains on separate hosts.

The site I need help with is valleyumcwdm.wordpress.com.

  • Hi there – Thank you for providing such a clear explanation of what you’re needing!

We want to keep the old website up and running while we construct this one.

This is very possible and a wonderful idea.

What would be the steps to upgrading, then transferring our godaddy domain name

Using your account here you would start a new site and upgrade to the Business plan in order to give you the ability to add plugins and more.

In the purchase process you’ll be asked to add a domain; skip that step for now and continue through to the purchase.

Once you are able to get your new site to the point where you are ready to launch, you would follow these instructions to transfer your domain from GoDaddy to your account here at WordPress.com and set it as the primary domain for your new site: https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/

That would effectively “launch” your new site at your domain with practically no site downtime.

Let us know if you have any questions about the information above, or within the domain transfer guide.

As a Business plan customer you will also have access to our Live Chat support which connects you to our Happiness Engineers immediately, no queue, to get the help you need to continue moving forward.
