Upgrading and Domain name redirects
-
Hello, I’ve been considering upgrading to one of the premium plans and I was curious how it works when you switch over to a custom domain. Does all previous traffic get rerouted to the new domain? For example if my site is kiwiblog.wordpress.com and I get a domain of kiwiblog.com if someone uses my old kiwiblog.wordpress.com/recipes/ link will it redirect to kiwiblog.com/recipes/ or will I have to update every one of my old links? Thank you.

Hi there theredhobbit
Yes! That’s exactly how it would work. The traffic going to kiwiblog.wordpress.com/recipes/ would automatically redirect to your new domain kiwiblog.com/recipes/
You will always have your free .wordpress.com available and they both will work, but your primary address would be your new domain (although you could change it if needed.
Here is some info if you want to learn more: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/register-domain/Cheers!

BTW, all the links for your pages or posts would update to your new domain + the same ending (called URL slug), so you don’t have to change anything. The redirection would work if you shared the link to anyone (e.g. to Twitter) it would get redirected to the new domain when they open it.
Just wanted to clarify that 😉
