Upgrading and reposting
-
I have been posting travel stories on my free WordPress blog for years. If I upgrade to get more storage, can I repost each story instead of simply upgrading the existing site? In other words, can I start with a clean slate. I’d like to repost to attract more readers.

Hi there,
For which site is this?
You can start with a clean slate as you describe by creating a new, separate site, and upgrading that instead. Or alternatively we can empty your existing site for you, but then you need to make sure you have all the posts and media files backed up somewhere, as emptying a site will wipe out everything completely, with no way to recover it from our end.
I wouldn’t recommend this, though – re-posting existing content will lead to search engines penalising you for duplicate content, which means fewer people will discover your site via search engines.
Instead, create new posts to feature old, existing posts on your site. The new post would then contain just a short excerpt of the original as a teaser, maybe including a short, original introduction, and then link back to the actual post. If you alternate “throwback” posts like this with new original posts, you can strike a good balance between gaining new readers for your old content, while not alienating your existing readers by only giving them stuff they’ve already seen.

Thanks for your response. I appreciate it.
Currently I have this blog: https://globetrottinggrandparents.wordpress.com
When I upgrade, I think I can drop the ‘wordpress’ and have .com, right? Does that mean I can keep the old blog, offline, to repost to the new blog? That would be awesome if possible. Thanks! -
We can completely empty the site for you if you want, but that cannot be reversed. If you really want to do that, please confirm.
Otherwise, if you upgrade https://globetrottinggrandparents.wordpress.com/ and add a custom domain like
example.comthen everything there will appear underexample.cominstead, no need to re-post. -
But I want to repost each one.. to get more readership…. And so that’s what I’m trying to figure out how to do best. It’s like starting the blog from scratch. Thank you.

If you add a custom .com domain, it will still be exactly the same site. The new domain just gets added on top of the existing globetrottinggrandparents.wordpress.com address, like putting a dust-jacket on a book. In other words, it’s not a new site at the .com address, with your posts on an old, separate site at globetrottinggrandparents.wordpress.com. It’s the same site, with the existing posts, just showing a different address in the browser.

If you’re sure you want to start from scratch we can empty the site for you. But that will completely remove all posts, pages, comments, and media files. In other words, your site will be completely blank.
And this process cannot be reversed – once we delete the content it’s gone forever. So you need to be sure you have all your posts and image files backed up so you can re-post them once we empty the site.
Sorry for the back and forth, but this is a highly destructive action, so we need to be sure you understand the risks.
Please confirm if you want us to completely empty the site at https://globetrottinggrandparents.wordpress.com/

Why not keep it simple. Start a new site with a different address. Set your existing site to private and then copy/paste content to the new site as you wish.

Yes, that’s exactly the way I’d like to do it. Thank you. I’ll look at a new name and do it that way. Many thanks.
