Upgrading my plan

  If I wanted to upgrade my free plan to a personal plan, will I be able to choose my own domain name assuming it has not already been taking? When I type in a custom domain name it says that I would have to upgrade to a premium plan and not a personal plan.

  Great question.

  As shown here, you absolutely can purchase a custom domain of your choice with just the person plan. The documentation I believe that you were looking at, says premium, but means that in the sense that you’re actually paying versus not paying.
