Upgrading my WordPress.com blog but keeping it simple

I would like to own the domain name and continue the blog, but keeping it as is for now. I have neither the advanced skill nor the time to learn how to do a lot of new things on it. How do I do this? Mark my learning curve at the moment slow.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

We have 4 different plans: free, personal, premium and business. All hosting is free regardless of which plan you choose. You can view all wordpress.com plan features here https://wordpress.com/pricing/
    https://wordpress.com/plans/

You can use the Personal Plan if all you want is a custom domain, removal of advertising, live chat support and 6GB Storage Space but you need to add the plan first. If you add the domain first, Premium is selected automatically. Go to http://wordpress.com/plans to upgrade.

This doesn’t answer my question. I already have my free WordPress.com blog well established. I want to keep the theme I already have when I pay for personal or premium. From what I can see, I won’t be able to.

    1. Do you have a checkbox for themes that lets me keep the theme I already have. It’s an old one that fits my needs perfectly.

    2. Do I keep what I’ve already posted? The postings usually have a photograph which is almost always one I’ve taken. That would add to the size.

    3. How do I find out the size of the blog in terms of its existing GBs?

  • Hi Ginny,

    1. Do you have a checkbox for themes that lets me keep the theme I already have. It’s an old one that fits my needs perfectly.

Upgrading to a plan won’t have any effect on the appearance or the contents of your blog. This means that your theme will remain as is along with all your widgets.

    2. Do I keep what I’ve already posted? The postings usually have a photograph which is almost always one I’ve taken. That would add to the size.

Yes, all of your contents will be intact.

    3. How do I find out the size of the blog in terms of its existing GBs?

To view how much space your content takes up, go to your Media Library and check the percentage bar at the top right:

If you have any other questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

I’m back with several more questions:

    1. When I sign up for a fee based WordPress.com, will I keep my blog name?
    2. Will I own my blog/domain name?
    3. If I don’t own my domain name through WordPress.com, do you know how I could arrange that?
    4. Will I own my blog?

    Many thanks,
    Ginny

    1. When I sign up for a fee based WordPress.com, will I keep my blog name?

The WordPress.com URL, belongs to WordPress.com (example: myblog.wordpress.com), but you can use it just as long as you desire. If at a later date you decide to delete the blog, or close your account, then that base WordPress.com URL (myblog.wordpress.com) will be marked as deleted and would not be able to be reused by anyone.

    2. Will I own my blog/domain name?

If you purchase a plan and a domain name, that domain name belongs to you and you can do with it as you please as long as you continue to renew that domain name and don’t let it expire. If you should decide to leave WordPress.com, you can point that domain name at a different web hosting service, and you can even transfer the domain to a different registrar if you wish.

All original content you create and put onto your blog is owned by you. If you decide at some point to move away from WordPress.com, you can export your content and take it with you.

    3. If I don’t own my domain name through WordPress.com, do you know how I could arrange that?

If you purchase a custom domain name, it belongs to you. See my reply above for more.

    4. Will I own my blog?

I believe my above responses answer this for you. If you still have questions, please let us know. We are happy to answer them for you.

I would also suggest looking through our Terms of Service for more information.
