Upgrading to a Personal Account
-
I am president of my neighborhood civic association, and we are looking to upgrade our web presence. Our site, http://nscivic.org, is the same as it has been since it launched in 2004 with only content updates really made. I am interested in upgrading to a ‘Personal’ site, but we have already registered a domain name, and we have a hosting service that has 400mb for only $94.80/year. We had a volunteer make a WordPress skeleton site as a proof of concept to our board. My question is what are my options to keep the current hosting service, keep our domain name, and still use the (new) WordPress site without having a .wordpress.com URL address?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello –
There are 2 versions of WordPress.
What happens here at WordPress.com is a bit different than the self hosted version of WordPress. This guide explains their differences: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
If you want to use your domain here, you can do that through Domain Mapping through our WordPress.com Personal Plan for $35.88/year. Each year, you would renew your domain through and your mapping through us to keep your site active. You would not need to continue with your hosting plan.
Self hosted, WordPress.org, is more hands on. There is not official support and you’d be responsible for all of your updates to the site, or fixing a broken site, etc…
I suggest reading over the Getting Started material on the left hand side of the WordPress.org support site.
My question is what are my options to keep the current hosting service, keep our domain name, and still use the (new) WordPress site without having a .wordpress.com URL address?
If you need to keep your hosting plan, then you’d be describing the self hosted version of WordPress.
Otherwise, you could map your domain to your WordPress.com account.
I’m happy to answer any follow up questions :)

Thanks! I’m sure you’ve gotten this question a lot, so thank you for assisting. I will definitely read the materials over, but it sounds like a WordPress.org site might be better for us.
