Upgrading to .com or .org?

  • Unknown's avatar

Right now I have several sites that will need to be upgraded. They are currently the $18 domain registered rus-nation.com and rus-newyork.com. What is the difference if I upgrade through WordPress for the $78/yr, or if I go through GoDaddy’s WordPress Package for $7/mo? I know WordPress.org offers more options, themes, and editing and that you need hosting for that which is why I was looking at the GoDaddy packages, but am confused on the difference in the WordPress Upgrade Store vs. upgrading to WordPress.com via GoDaddy.

In addition, I have a third site that will potentially be migrating over from a custom built site and hosting platform to the GoDaddy hosting with WordPress.org. What is the best way to do that so that I don’t have any downtime?

    Thank you!
    CJ

    Hi CJ!

So, with the WordPress.com Premium upgrade (this is the one you would pay $99/year or the $79 dollars a year because you already purchased the domain) your site would be hosted by WordPress.com. With this hosting/upgrade you can register a free domain (which you have already done), use Custom Design to add custom colors/fonts and edit CSS, use VideoPress to upload HD videos, get an extra 10 GB of space, and have No Ads on your site. In addition you can receive direct support from us, unfortunately, this wouldn’t be available at WordPress.org with GoDaddy hosting.

If you were to go with the GoDaddy WordPress package you would not be hosted with us – you would be hosted through GoDaddy using the free WordPress.org install.

To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities. At WordPress.com, we provide hosting, support, and tons of features for blogs. WordPress.org is a software for self-hosted sites. With WordPress.org, users are provided access to all backend files and can upload custom themes and plugins.

Check here to learn more about the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

We do offer tools for helping to make your WordPress.org experience as awesome as WordPress.com. Jetpack supercharges your website with features like easy video embedding, stats, and Twitter and Facebook sharing tools. VaultPress provides realtime, continuous backup and scans your website for security and performance. More information on both can be found at these links:

So in the end it really depends on what you are looking for. Are you looking for for more freedom with plugins? If you are I’d recommend WordPress.org, but if you are okay with the features we have on WordPress.com and don’t plan on doing more then I’d definitely stay at WordPress.com. It would provide more support, and stability.

If you need help moving your site, we do have an upgrade called Guided Transfer that will do all the heavy lifting for you:

I hope this helps and feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
