Upgrading to paid (personal), but I own a domain
-
I own a domain through namecheap.
I’ve compared hosting services and staying on wordpress.com makes most sense to me for my needs.
I would like to upgrade to the cheapest option (personal). I see that I will get a credit that allows me to map my already-owned domain as the primary domain.
However, if I did not have a domain, I’d be able to get a domain registered for free.
If I had taken advantage of this free new domain registration, would it renew for free every year, included in the yearly $2.99 per month fee? (https://wordpress.com/pricing/)
Or would it cost a fee beyond the $2.99?
I’m just concerned that owning my domain through another registrar would be a worse deal for me.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

In order to remove the .wordpress.com URL and replace that with a domain URL you have to purchase an upgrade. See https://wordpress.com/pricing/
See: Map an existing domain (one you already own) to your WordPress.com blog – if you already have a domain that you registered and purchased elsewhere. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/
What domain mapping does is providing a seamless redirect to the very same content under the new domain URL when a person clicks the old URL to the original content.
Note that each upgrade bundle applies to a single blog only and is for a single year only when it is due to be renewed.
We all pay in full for every upgrade at the time of purchase. Make sure you read the comparison very closely do you know exactly what the restrictions and limitations on WordPress.COM blogging are: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

So let me get this straight, because I’m still not clear.
If I upgrade to Personal, I get a free credit to do a domain redirect.
Next year, when it’s time to renew, I have to pay outright for the domain redirect in addition to the $2.99 per month for 12 months?
-
And in the case of someone who used their domain credit to register a new domain – would they have to pay for a renewal after a year, an amount to renew that domain in addition to the $2.99 per month for 12 months?

I am not confused about paying yearly. I am confused about if that first year I get a credit toward domain mapping and then have to pay in addition to the yearly fee for that to renew.
Same question for domain registration. Or is that just rolled into the total yearly cost?
-
Staff will clarify that for you. What’s important is twofold:
answering your question;
understanding what causes confusion, so they can update support documentation. -
Here’s how I am experiencing confusion:
I feel wordpress.com/pricing implies that the yearly domain renewal for a WordPress.com paid plan is part of that yearly fee.
I also sense that if you bring your own domain from elsewhere, you are paying the same yearly fee as a user who registered through wordpress. Yet the person bringing a domain already paid for the domain elsewhere. This would then be a worse deal for you.
If my assumptions are correct, it would make most economic sense to abandon your domain from the other registrar first, then register it through wordpress.com by signing up for a paid plan, rather than linking it.
This conclusion could be false if:
– a user who gets a fresh domain through a wordpress paid plan actually has to pay a renewal fee to wordpress after the first year.
AND
– the user who brought a domain does not have to pay for an extra “domain linking” upgrade year after year. -
Any updates on this?
Even simpler question that gets to the heart of me purchasing a Personal plan:
Will the free Domain Mapping upgrade included with the $35.88 Personal Plan continue to renew for free alongside the Personal Plan for the $35.88 in subsequent years? Or will I need to pay $13 for it the second year, on top of the $35.88?
-
Hi there,
The domain is included in the plan, so when the plan renews every year, so does the domain. This is true whether you have a mapped domain or a domain registration as part of your plan.
The only time where you’ll need to pay separately for a domain is if you were to add a second domain in addition to the one already included in your plan.
