Upgrading to Person Paid Plans from Free
-
So, I’ve had a a free site for some time, and am looking to upgrade it to a more professional looking .com rather than .wordpress. But I don’t understand the description of the paid plans.
It looks like I’ll lose my ability to customize my site if I upgrade? Why would the paid plan take that away and how am I supposed to manage anything about the site without that? Or am I misunderstanding?
Also, what is the ‘free domain for a year’ statement about? Does that mean that there’s some additional charge they’ll add in after a year? Where could I find info on that?
Thanks in advance!

Upgrading from a free plan to a paid plan simply gives you extra features, it doesn’t take away anything you already have. Bear in mind that registering a .com address that consists of all or part of your name would be a big commitment. If you didn’t renew it is likely the domain would be purchased by someone else and they could use it for good or bad stuff with your name displayed.
An annual paid plan gives you the ability to register a custom domain free for the first year. In future years you would pay to renew the plan and pay an extra fee to renew the domain. The cost of that domain portion of the costs can be found below.
WordPress.com users can register domains or transfer domains to WordPress.com using any of the extensions (also called top-level domains or TLDs) listed on this page. Adding here that you are not obligated to create/use a custom domain on your site. You can continue with your current website address charlotteannrose.wordpress.com on both the Personal and Premium plans.

I believe the OP thinks a .wordpress.com address looks “unprofessional”. I don’t think anyone notices these days. How many people actually type addresses into a browser? People just click on links to get to where they are going. I prefer a .wordpress.com address as, compared to a custom domain, it is mine forever until I delete it when it is gone forever. However I see the attraction of a Personal plan to give you the ability to remove the cheap and nasty ads that now overwhelm free sites.

Hi there!
I’ll be happy to answer the questions you have regarding WordPress.com plans. :)
It looks like I’ll lose my ability to customize my site if I upgrade?
Could you tell me more about this? Which description, in particular, from the paid plan’s features made you think you’ll lose the ability to customize your site if you upgrade? I ask this so that I can understand this and give you a better answer.
Also, what is the ‘free domain for a year’ statement about? Does that mean that there’s some additional charge they’ll add in after a year?
Yes, domain registrations have their own separate prices. You can see the domain pricing in this list:
WordPress.com users can register domains or transfer domains to WordPress.com using any of the extensions (also called top-level domains or TLDs) listed on this page. Get started and find your domain now. Standard Domain Registration and Renewal Pricing The price for one year of domain registration for standard-priced domains in each TLD are listed below. Note: All TLDs on this page caYou’ll see that different domain extensions (Called TLDs) have different pricing. A .com domain, as of now, costs $19 per year. With a yearly WordPress.com plan, you will get a free domain for the first year. That means we won’t charge you this domain registration fee if you upgrade to a yearly WordPress.com plan.
From the second year onwards, you will renew the WordPress.com plan and the domain registration separately.
Hope that helps! If you’d like to upgrade, you can do so using the button below.
