Upgrading to Premium and Links.

I currently have a ‘free’ site, and I’m interested in switching to ‘Premium’ for the ability to get an actual domain and placing a PayPal button on the page. My question is; if I acquire an actual domain, will all of my internal like still work?…or will have to go through 300+ posts to fix all of them.

Also, I want to add in a PayPal button for donations; will the Premium account handle that?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • All links will automatically redirect from your WordPress.com subdomain to your primary domain.

As for the question on PayPal, yes, you can add one using WordPress.com Premium account. You can learn about it here. https://en.support.wordpress.com/paypal/

I hope this helps. Feel free to get back if you have questions.

Hi there, just adding to what @strikebuys mentioned.

It’s possible to add a PayPal “donate” button to any plan, including the free plan. See this guide for step-by-step instructions: https://en.support.wordpress.com/paypal/ While the Premium/Business Plan’s “Simple Payments” button makes the process of adding a button easier, adding a PayPal button can still be done under both the free and Personal plan.

You can use your own domain under any of our upgrade plans, including the Personal plan. https://en.support.wordpress.com/plan-features/ If you decide to go with the Personal plan, buy that first before adding a domain otherwise it will default to the Premium plan at checkout.

Let us know if you have any other question about this.

We’re thinking of just dropping a PayPal link into each blog post, so even the people in the reader can see it.

    Regarding internal links…
Just to verify; all of the links that are there now (in over 300 posts) will remain working after we put a .com over the .wordpress.com? I DO NOT want to have to go back and fix thousands of links. After we place the .com, do we use that as the new link, or can we still use the .wp.com address for the link?

Also regarding “simple payments”, can we use the same logic for “Patreon” instead of PayPal…we’re looking at both.

  • Hi there,

The Simple Payments button is a PayPal specific integration. We have no such integration for Patreon.

If Patreon has a way for you to generate a plain HTML button (not using any form, iframe or script code) you can use that by pasting the code directly into the HTML view of the editor on any post or page. You don’t need any upgrade plan to be able to do this.

“Happiness Engineer”…very “Disney” -esque…I like it!

Any thoughts on the link situation?

    How domain mapping works

Registering an underlying .wordpress.com URL first is required for domain mapping. That underlying URL does not have to match the domain URL when you are domain mapping. What domain mapping does is providing a seamless redirect to the very same content under the new domain URL when a person clicks the old URL .wordpress.com to the original content. It can take up to 72 hours for domain propagation to take place throughout the internet but it doesn’t usually take that long. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

There are 3 ways to add a custom domain to your blog. Please note that an active WordPress.com plan is required to add a custom domain to your site. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#getting-started

WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/ The domain or mapping of any existing domain URL is included in the pricing for a personal upgrade, a premium and a business upgrade. The WordPress.COM upgrade for mapping a domain must be renewed annually.

WordPress.com does not provide an email service for blogs on their sub domains or on custom domains. Please see these support docs
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-email/
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/email-forwarding/

We will more than likely just get a new domain through WP, so that should make things much easier.

I’m inquiring about an existing blog with over 300 posts. If I already have internal links throughout the blog, directing to other posts (same blog), will a new domain effect any of them, or will WP see them as it always has…so no broken links. Or, will I have to go and fix thousands of internal post links with the new address?

  • Any internal links referencing your free WordPress.com address will automatically be redirected to the domain that you add, as @strikebuys said in his initial reply. The URL appearing in the post will still reference the *.wordpress.com address, but clicking it will open the correct post at your custom domain.

The same goes for any instances where you’ve shared the *.wordpress.com link on social media, or elsewhere on the web.

Search engines will still refer to the free address for a few weeks after adding the domain, but that will update automatically as they re-index your content at the new address.
