i am posting contents on a free wordpress.com blog several years.. it has average 30,000 views per month. tickettogetlost.wordpress.com.
now i am planning to buy a new domain ‘tickettogetlost.com’ and move the contents to the new website. if i upgrade to a new website, will i lose all the views and traffic?! new site will be start from ZERO views?!

how to carry all the users, views, stats to the new site??

  • Hi there,

No, you won’t lost your stats. Your site will remain exactly the same. The only thing that’ll change will be the address. Once you register a domain we’ll automatically redirect all traffic from the old .wordpress.com address to the new domain.

Please note that o be able to set that domain as the primary address for your site, you’ll need to have an upgraded WordPress.com plan.

If you have any other questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

    @fstat
means you don’t need to move anywhere. Upgrade your free site to a Personal plan or higher here and you will get the custom domain of your choice included free for the first year.

  • @rajletsgetlost to further clarify, we just add the domain to your site (after you upgrade) so that you can set it as the address. We don’t actually “move” anything, and the site you have now does not change in any way other than the address being a different URL.

    Hope this helps!

    okay. got it. thanks.

so, what if i hosting the domain on a different server? like in godaddy, etc..
not on wordpress.com plan. on that case?

  • Hi there,

Let me just first clarify the terms we’re using here: Hosting refers to having a server on which your website’s files are hosted so that other people can access your site in their browsers. The company who owns the server is your hosting provider.

People access your site on your hosting provider’s servers via an address, i.e. a domain you connect to that server. Your domain is bought from a domain registrar.

Your domain registrar and your hosting provider can be the same company, or you can have two different providers for those different services.

If your site is with us on WordPress.com, we are your hosting provider. You can register a domain directly with us, or you can register a domain with GoDaddy and just point it to us. Either way, we stay your hosting provider, and either way you will need a WordPress.com plan on your site to have your site appear at that domain.

In that case nothing moves – your site stays exactly as it is, just the address at which visitors access it in their browsers change. So you don’t lose any followers or stats.

If you want to host your site itself somewhere else, for example GoDaddy, you’ll need to buy a hosting plan from GoDaddy, install the WordPress software on their servers, and then move your site’s content from your WordPress.com site, to your new WordPress installation on GoDaddy’s servers. In other words, once this process is complete your site will have nothing to do with WordPress.com at all any more.

In this case you will start with no followers and no stats, as it will be a completely new site. But you can use a plugin called Jetpack to connect that site to your WordPress.com account, which will allow you to transfer your stats and followers to the new site.

Let me know if you have any other questions about this.
