Upgrading wordpress – effect on content

    Hello,

I want to upgrade my blog to a Personal plan, and I have a few questions.

    1. I am using the Manifest theme, which is retired. If I upgrade, will my theme or content be affected? Can I continue to use Manifest? That is the theme that I want to keep using.

    2. I researched how to back up my site, and it looks like doing so requires a plug in. I don’t think I can download a back up plug in without upgrading to a Business plan, which I don’t plan to do. And anyway it wouldn’t help me because I’d be wanting to back up before upgrading anyway. Is there a way to back up my site, or restore the older version if necessary, without downloading a plug in? Is it necessary to back up before upgrading?

    Thanks!

  • Hi there,

Upgrading does not have any effect on your site’s content or theme. The only thing that will visibly change on your site once you upgrade is that ads will disappear. Otherwise nothing will change.

You can use a retired theme for as long as it continues to work, but it will eventually break as retired themes no longer receive updates and bug fixes.

There is no need to back up your site. We keep multiple backups of all active sites on WordPress.com in the event that a critical systems error causes data to be lost.

But you can create an export of your site’s content only, if you prefer:
