uplaod a 2.5MB photo then it’s crunched is it still taking up 2.5MB of space?

    Hi,
If I upload a large photo, it’s then cruched and displayed is it still taking up the large space (2.5MBs) or is it stored as the new size (whatever is displayed on my blog?).
I’m just wondering cos if it’s the bigger size then it’ll be slowing down pages when people are tyring to view them.

    Cheers,
    Pa.

Yes. There’s no point in uploading such large files: you need to reduce their resolution and/or optimize them for the web.

Also note that images scaled down by the uploader lose some color and sharpness compared to images scaled down in an image editing application and uploaded in full size.

(uploaded in full size should read inserted in full size.)

  • “crunching” just means WordPress.com is processing and storing your uploaded file (it is distributed to many different servers around the country). The untouched original is stored just as you uploaded it. Smaller versions are used sometimes to make pages load faster, but they don’t replace your original (and don’t take up any of your upload space).

We’re aware of the colour and sharpness issues and are testing an improved resizer that doesn’t have those shortcomings.
