Upload a new theme

    Upload theme

    I have been given a WP theme as a ZIP file and have been asked to upload it to use on a WP blog. The instructions detail going to the Appearance/Themes page on the dashboard and then “Click on ‘Add New’ at the top of the page. This will open the ‘Add Themes’ page.” Except when I go to the Themes page there is no ‘Add New’ button. Anyone know what to do next?

    Hi there,
    That button only exists on WordPress.ORG software installs. It does not exist on blogs hosted by WordPress.COM.

    You cannot import any third party theme designed to run on for WordPress.ORG software and use it on any WordPress.COM blog, so do be clear on that.

    The only themes we can use on WordPress.com hosted blogs are licensed and adapted to run on our multiuser software the themes are found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and in your dashboard at > Appearance > Themes

    There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs for security reasons and we cannot:
    upload any third party themes,
    create child themes,
    create our own themes,
    edit templates,
    create own own layouts,
    or use stylesheets from other themes.

    You cannot upload any third party themes into a WordPress.COM hosted blog so be clear on that. There is no upgrade you can purchase here that changes that reality.

    WordPress.org offers free software that you can install on a web server. You can create themes, upload and install themes and plugins, run ads, and edit the database, etc. If you want FTP access and to install plugins or third party themes into a site then you will have to hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/ and set up your own WordPress.org install.

    OK looks like I’ll have to do an install then – thanks.

    This was not explained in the instructions from the theme developer, so I didn’t know I had to go down that route.
