Please read the FAQ at the head of these forums. This has already been discussed many times over already and is covered in the FAQ.

Uploading a theme really hasn’t been covered sufficiently in the FAQ, and I would have loved to find an answer here. Do I need further administrative capabilities to upload a theme that I have downloaded from theblogstudio.com, that has been tailor made for WordPress 2.0?

    It’s not covered?

How do I add my favorite WordPress plug in (plugin) or theme?
Currently no additions can be made to your blog as FTP access is not allowed.

I have a feeling though that since you’re mentioning WordPress 2.0, you’re actually hosting your blog elsewhere instead of here at WordPress.com. The WordPress software that runs WP.com is different from the version of WordPress that you download and host elsewhere. You need to be over there as that’s the site for that software.

The FAQ covers those blogs hosted here at WP.com

phew…this is all so confusing. Let me give you a quick background. I saw a blog I loved, I scouted out the template (it was from blogstudio.com) and the blog host (wordpress.com, or so I was told)…I managed to download the template, create a wordpress account, and now it looks like I don’t have permission to upload the theme? I don’t mind paying some hosting services or something like that if that’s the problem, it’s just the only blog template I’ve really loved and I’d be thrilled if I could get it up and running here…but alas, no? I also have a separate domain that I’ve purchased and would love to link to, but I suppose that’s a separate post entirely….

    thanks for your help dr.

If your blog is hosted here at WordPress.com (ie if it has the wordpress.com bit in the URL) then you are limited to the themes already installed and located at Dashboard -> Presentation. There is no option to upload or install anything besides what is currently available to you.

We get a lot of people who have their blogs hosted elsewhere and come here to these forums by mistake thinking that this is where they need to be when they really need to be over there. Since your account was less than an hour old, I was thinking that this was you as well.

If you’re really stuck on that theme and need to use that domain that you have purchased, then being hosted elsewhere would be best for you. Most hosters have some method of autoinstalling the standard WordPress software for you with you just clicking on a link. Instructions on up[loading a theme are located here for blogs hosted elsewhere.

Your best bet in that case your be to contact your ISP and ask if they offer hosting. Since WP.com is a free service, I can’t point you in the direction of any companies that sell hosting space. I will mention though that WordPress.org maintains a list located here.

I would ask your ISP first though. You might already have hosting included with your internet access.

    Good luck,
    -drmike
