upload filters (Article 17)
-
Hello!
In Europe, a law has been passed that requires upload filters (Article 17). This means that before uploading content, it must be checked for copyrights. Is wordpress affected by this?

Hi there,
I’m not sure how to reply since we are primarily a US based company. But I’ve asked our legal team to take a look to see how it would affect our service, and will reply here as soon as I know more.
Out of curiosity are you accepting written text or photos from your site visitors via your contact form? Are you using the contact form on your site in a way you feel would be a violation of this new law? Thanks for the additional info!

No, the problem is not in the contact form but in the blog posts that may infringe copyrights.
Best Regards!

No, according to the new law, the platform (for example youtube) is obliged to scan all uploaded content for possible copyright infringements and block it if necessary. But only giants like Google or Microsoft can afford such technology. My question now is whether wordpress is also affected by this.
With kind regards

Hi there,
Thanks for your note. The provisions of the Copyright Directive are complex, and the implementation of these into national law – as well as the impact on providers of different kinds – are still being worked out in countries across the EU.
We do share concerns about automated tools, and have written about this here:
We’re Against Bots, Filtering, and the EU’s New Copyright Directive.
You will still be able to use your WordPress.com site in the same way as before. If that changes, we’ll be sure to notify the users affected.
