Upload Limit (Free vs Paid Hosting)

  • Unknown's avatar

Is there an upload limit for free sites or is that an entirely pay-to-use feature? If I do pay for hosting, can that limit be increased? I created a site with NicePage and I am looking to export that theme from NP to WordPress. However, I get the error message that my file is too large (over 9 mb) and I need to contact my host provider. I want to clarify this before I spend the money on hosting (and then go through the refund process lol.)

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

  • Hi @geistbox, our free sites have a 1GB upload limit, and that does increase with paid plans: https://wordpress.com/pricing

Can you clarify what type of file you’re uploading? We’d be happy to make sure you’re set up properly. Cheers!

  • Also just to clarify this:

I get the error message that my file is too large (over 9 mb)

For an individual file, it would depend on the type of file you’re uploading. If it’s an export file, for example, that you’re importing here, the limit would be different from what you’d get if you were uploading a video.

We’ll help you get this sorted out.

I appreciate you getting back to me so quickly.

My file type is a direct export (project) file. Within the NicePage desktop app, I am selecting WordPress and then attempting to export it. It’ll load, do it’s thing, and then error out.

I’ve also tried to directly upload the project file (as a zip folder) onto WordPress. This will result in nothing. Nothing will be uploaded or even change. I’m assuming it’s because I am using a free site..

If it is an issue due to being a free site, that’s okay. I just want to see if it’s something on my end before I commit to the hosting 😅

  • Hello there,

Being on the free site may very well be a factor here, but to confirm we may need to take a look at the zip folder that’s been downloaded. Are you able to upload this to the media library so that we can take a look please.

I suspect you may need this plugin here: https://nicepage.com/doc/67475/install-wordpress-plugin – which would requite a Pro Plan.

    Many thanks!

I am unable to upload this zip folder to the media library. When I attempt to upload it, I get the error message of “1 file could not be uploaded because the file type is not supported.”

The zip folder is a direct export from the NicePage desktop app. I can see and locate it just fine. I just do not have any upload capability with it comes to WordPress.

I’ll probably just end up buying the Pro plan and see if it does what I need it to do.

    I appreciate all the help.

  • Hi there,

We’re not familiar with NicePage, but from what I can see it is a standalone app that you can use to design web pages, and it has a “plugin” you can use to push those changes to a live WordPress site.

    https://nicepage.com/doc/1323/start-with-wordpress-theme-and-plugin

To clarify, NicePage does not use the default import/export system that comes with WordPress; that is intended for moving the contents of a WordPress site to another WordPress site. The formatting of NicePage export files is not understood by our system

It is not possible to install plugins on our free sites, but if you upgrade to our Pro plan, that will allow you to install the NicePage plugin and then you would be able to proceed with your export using the steps they recommend in the article I linked above.

For more info on our upgrades, please see https://wordpress.com/pricing/

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
