Upload the files to wp-content/plugins/bookshelf

I am fairly clueless when it comes to website building beyond the basic, sign up for a blog. When I look at widgets, I see the phrase “Upload the files to wp-content/plugins/bookshelf.” What does that even mean? How do I do it?

There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.COM blogs and we cannot intsall plugins, upload third-party themes or edit templates or themes. Those found on the internet are for WordPress.ORG installs which run on different software.

If you have hired a web hosted and are referring to a wordpress.org install, and not to a free hosted wordpress.com blog, then you need to post to the correct support forum here http://wordpress.org/support/ To do that you need to register a wordpress.org username account on the top right hand corner of the page I just linked to.

Also, are you seeing this in http://writingthroughtime.wordpress.com/ ? If not, what’s the blog URL?

Due to security concerns, WordPress.com doesn’t support plugins.
You’re able to use widgets on your blog without any need to use plugins. To do so, head to Appearance -> Widgets in your blog’s dashboard.
If this is where you saw the phrase “Upload the files to wp-content/plugins/bookshelf.”, can you let me know what steps you took to make the message appear? A screenshot of the problem would also be helpful, so I can look into the issue for you.

I assume you’re referring to http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bookshelf/ which is an eCommerce plugin.
While you can sell your work on your blog, no blogger initiated advertising, retailing, or reselling of work created or services provided by other people is allowed on WordPress.com.

There are no restrictions on e-commerce if you set up a self-hosted WordPress.org blog instead of a WordPress.com blog, but there are some added responsibilities.
