upload theme

i was tying to unload my theme but it keep asking to get a business plan. so some videos online and they are not getting this ever. I am making a website for educational purpose and do not have much budget. even my website domain name ends like this .wordpress.com. I don’t understand why do i have to pay to upload a theme.

Hello. Is your theme a 3rd party theme? If so, only the business plan can upgrade 3rd party themes on WordPress.com. However you can activate any of the themes found in the theme showcase.

The videos you are seeing online have to do with the open source version of WordPress, which is why there’s a difference. The videos are for that version installed on a web host to a purchased hosting and domain name.
WordPress.com and WordPress.org are a little separate, and that can be confusing.
So you can definitely create a site for free here and use WordPress.com services, however you’ll have more luck to follow the tutorials here than the ones you find on the web. The support site https://en.support.wordpress.com/ will help you learn how to create a site for free.
