Please help!!! I updated my blog with a new post today. I checked to see that it was uploaded. I then signed out. When I signed back in after an hour; the post doesn’t show!! I connected the post to links on twitter and another blog and those don’t work too. I am not a techie. And don’t know what to do. Please help bring back my post. I spent a good amount of time on this.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’m sorry but I cannot help until you provide an active link to the blog this is happening on starting with http:// and the title of the post you refer to.

Note: Be sure to check your draft posts in your dasboard “All Posts” – “Drafts” as you may have clicked “save draft” rather than clicking “publish”.

    Hey! Thanks for responding
    The blog is: http://www.menkris.wordpress.com

The title is: Bridling the behemoth.

There is a very early draft version under posts in dashboard.
I saved drafts many times as I wrote. When i was finally done, I hit publish, checked it was fine and only then added tags. WP congratulated me for making ten posts and i then logged out and posted the update on twitter. Suddenly when I log in again a few hours later, it was gone.

Really hope you get it back for me somehow. Thanks for your support!

Is it visible on your dashboard under Drafts?

  • Unknown's avatar

No. A very early version of the post is visible under drafts. I wrote for at least an hour after that version. With frequent clicking on ‘save my draft’

The entire post was uploaded. I saw it. Only after I saw it. Did I go to edit and add tags. Then I linked to twitter

It is terrible/ please help me get it back. I spent a lot of time and I am very new to this blogging experience.
    Thanks!

I have bad news. Lots of people have been reporting similar errors, primarily on long, complicated posts that they’ve saved as drafts repeatedly. They get wiped out. Unfortunately, nobody seems to know what is causing this.

While the issue persists, we are currently recommending you use an offline blog editor like Windows Live Writer to compose your posts and then upload them. That way you always have a copy, even if things go weird on you.

Thank you for breaking it to me Raincoaster. :(((((
Am so disappointed, it will take me some time to blog again. Maybe this blogging thing is for techies, or for people who have the time to learn.

I should have written on word and c/p-ed it. But..the whole thing seemed so simple with the post page inviting you to start a new post and it all seemed one-click and simple. I should have worried about back-up. But foolishly imagined that wordpress was on top of that because that is what they said when I joined. How come they are not responsible for anything? Whatever….maybe it is childish or petulant but I am so upset. I am off blogging for sure

Thanks much for your help raincoaster! Good Luck in all your ventures!

Blogging is not supposed to be for techies; this error is a SERIOUS problem for WordPress.com and it is absolutely not supposed to happen. I’ve been here about seven years and this is the worst I’ve ever seen it. Before, it was always fixed within a few hours.

Don’t use Word; Word introduces all kinds of other problems you don’t need. Use Windows Live Writer which works the same but you can add categories and tags and pictures that will all transfer seamlessly to your blog when you upload the post.

And don’t forget to back up your blog in case something more serious happens. And it might have been possible to save your new post this way, too, by doing these steps shortly after publishing the new post.

In your admin panel, go to Tools, Export … select All Content then click Download Export File. This file gets named with the date, so if you export daily, you get a new file each day.

    @menkris:
    a) Word introduces lots of bad code when you paste into the Visual editor, but is harmless if you paste into the HTML editor.
    b) Avoid using drafts: write a couple of lines, set the post visibility to private, publish the post, continue writing and updating, turn to public when finished.

For raincoaster, motre and justpi – a BIG thanks! Your kindness with my problem makes me feel a little better. thanks for the info on NOT using word, and on back-up. I had no idea! Still, dont know what windows live writer is, but will find out. With my lack of info on back-up I guess I should be glad that whatever little I’ve managed to write is still somehow there! Thanks a lot folks! Have a good one!

    You’re welcome!
By the way, this draft business has been going on for months; let’s see when WP will deign address the issue…

  • Unknown's avatar

Windows Live Writer is a program from microsoft that works like Word but is specially made for blogging. It automatically saves a copy of everything you’re doing so you never have this problem. You can just google for it, and it is free and reliable.

By the way, this draft business has been going on for months…

Then it has become a feature. Bugs become features after a certain time period. I think it is 30 days.

  • Unknown's avatar

Ah yes – silly me: Draft roulette, obviously an extension of “Surprise me (Fun mode)”….

  • Unknown's avatar

Oh yes, that’s it. Fun mode!

    How come users aren’t laughing?

  • Unknown's avatar

U MAY HAVE ENABLED THE PRIVATE BUTTON IN SHARING OPTION

  • Unknown's avatar

I don;t even know where the private button is. I clicked on sharing, there is nothing like a private button there either. The post is just clean gone! It has vanished! Bizarre and frustrating. Will write on writer from now as suggested by raincoaster and others. Thanks for the help/ if someone figures out some way to retrieve it, please let me know!
    Cheers all!
