Uploaded file giving 404 Error
-
I have a .doc file that I uploaded to my blog in August. The link used to work just fine. Someone just reported to me that it now gives a 404 error, and they are correct. Does anyone know why this would happen, and should I just try uploading the file again?

Can you give us a link to the exact post or page where the file was? Also take a look under manage > uploads and see if the file shows up there. If it does, then edit the post or page where it is and try relinking it.

The link is the “Pairing Up With Gauss” link at the bottom of the page.
When I look under Manage > uploads the file still appears to be there. But I tried re-linking it and I get the same link code as the original (and thus it still produces a 404 error when clicked). Similarly if I click to “view” the uploaded file, I get a link that gives me a 404 error.

I get the 404 error also in Safari and FireFox (mac). I also tried downloading it to my desktop to see if it would open, but it just gives me the 404 also. You might want to try uploading it again to see if that works.
If that doesn’t work, I would suggest contacting support when they open tomorrow morning. Give them the file name and the information above.

Thanks for your help. While I have your attention, why is it that support “closes” at night? I understand that they’re not there all the time, but why can’t we leave a note?

Re-uploading and re-linking fixed the problem. After I re-uploaded it, I noticed that my original no longer had a file size listed under it while browsing uploads. If I’d noticed, I would have realized right away that something was definitely wrong with the uploaded file. Is there any “normal” reason why a file should disappear like that — due to age, or lack of access or too much access or anything like that?
Thanks again.

You are very welcome.Support runs 9-5 PDT monday thru friday. For the most part, most problems posted here in the forum can be handled by the volunteers and moderator. Staff does monitor the forums, and it isn’t unusual for them to pop in on off-hours if there is a problem volunteers cannot solve.
Who knows why the file got messed up, but it sometimes happens. Glad you are back up and running. You might want to check it a couple times over the next few days just to make sure.
