Uploaded files show 0.00 B file size.

I have uploaded a bunch of good PDF-files to be embedded in my posts, but all of them display as having no contents, i.e., File size = 0.00 B, when I check them in the Media Library. What is causing this problem? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi there,
Looks like the PDF files weren’t uploaded correctly. I suggest clearing your browser’s cache (https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache) and then try uploading them again by following these instructions:
https://wordpress.com/support/media/#add-files-from-your-computer
If this doesn’t work or you have more questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help!

Hi fstat,
Thank you for your suggestion. Here is what I did, in the order shown:
1. I deleted all the pdf-files from the Media library
2. I completely (All time) cleared the cache on my browser (Google Chrome)
3. I uploaded one of my PDF-files to the Media library to test the process
4. I checked that file in the Media library using “Edit”, and it still shows 0.00 B
5. The size of that same PDF-file on my computer is 144 KB (147,980 bytes)So, unfortunately, the PDF-file wasn’t uploaded correctly. In the Editor I noticed that the file name now has a “-7” extension. I guess this means that my WordPress blog “remembers” how many previous versions of this file I uploaded to the Media library. Could this be the source of the problem? Do you have any other suggestions? Thank you in advance for your help.

Thank you for the details. So that we can troubleshoot this further, can you let us know the operating system and web browser information that you are using when trying to upload the PDFs?
For example, are you on Windows 10 using the Microsoft Edge browser?
Thank you!

I had a look at our logs for your site, and the deleted files all contained data. If I access the most recent one you uploaded directly on our servers I can also see all its content, but the version in your media library at https://uriyosef.files.wordpress.com/2021/06/judchrcomp-7.pdf is blank.
So it looks like the file is being uploaded correctly, but the media library is not returning it correctly.
I’d like to see if it makes a difference if I upload the file from my end, so can you please upload it for me to https://www.dropbox.com/request/dUmvgxPFX4YiNYEYyycH

Hi kokkieh,
Thank you for your response. I wonder why this is happening in the Media library; it’s weird. OK, I will now upload that file to your dropbox, and will wait to see if it uploads correctly in my Media library. Thanks again.

Okay, it’s definitely a problem with the file – uploading that file to my own site, the same thing happens – the file directly on our server has all the content, but the version in the media library is blank.
Then I opened your file in Adobe Reader, saved it, and then uploaded it, and it works fine.
So something in how this file was created is causing an encoding error which causes problems with the media library.
How did you create that PDF? Directly in a PDF editor like Adobe? Or did you create it in a word processor like MS Word and then convert it to PDF? If the latter, did you use the option to Save As PDF, or did you use some other method to convert it?

Hi kokkieh, Thank you for your response. Perhaps we’re making some progress here. I apologize for the delayed reply. I thought that I put up a response and answered your questions, but apparently I must have not pressed “Submit”.
The PDFs that I’ve been trying to upload to the Media library were created from MS Word files by using the (free) PDFCreator from pdfforge.org. I have never had any such issues when I upload such PDF files to a page hosted on FileZilla.org.

Can you check if just using the Save As feature in Word, and selecting the PDF file format instead, works better? Word can create PDFs directly, bypassing the need to use any additional app for this, and it sounds like that PDF creator you’re using is encoding the files in a way our system doesn’t like.
I have never had any such issues when I upload such PDF files to a page hosted on FileZilla.org.
WordPress.com is a shared hosting environment, so every file uploaded to our servers is scanned for malicious or invalid content, and anything that shouldn’t be there gets stripped out. The same thing wouldn’t happen if you uploaded a file using FileZilla, as that upload directly to the server, bypassing the WordPress software’s built-in file validation, and potentially bypassing any security scanning done by your hosting provider themselves as well.

Hi kokkieh, Thank you for your response. OK, I never used MS Word to save a file as a PDF. If this option is available on my MSWord 2007, I will try to do this with that file, and then upload it to the Media library. I’ll then check to see if it uploaded properly and will let you know either way.

Hi kokkieh, I just saved my MS Word file as PDF, and then I added it to the Media library. Checking the uploaded file via the Media library Edit still shows the file size as 0.00 B. On my PC that file size is 509 KB (521,495 bytes), which is close to 4x the size of the PDF file created with PDFCreator.
So, something is going on while uploading the file. There is no malicious or invalid content in this or any of my other files – it’s just text & some URLs to other resources, which all my files have. I’ll upload it to your dropbox so you can take a look at it.

Hi there,
From what I can see it is in your media library here: https://uriyosef.files.wordpress.com/2021/07/judchrcomp.pdf
Checking the uploaded file via the Media library Edit still shows the file size as 0.00 B. On my PC that file size is 509 KB (521,495 bytes), which is close to 4x the size of the PDF file created with PDFCreator.
I noticed you mentioned MSWord 2007, which is an older version of the app. I suspect that there is some issue with how Word is encoding it’s files that prevent us from correctly reporting the file size. Do you happen to have a newer version of Word you can use as a test, to see if it’s possible to produce a more trouble-free PDF that way?
With that said, even though it says 0.00 B, I can confirm the upload was successful. If you see the file in your media library it’s a good bet the upload was successful, but if you continue to have issues please let us know.
By the way, you can watch the video here to see how you can embed your PDF file into any page or post on your site. https://d.pr/v/hRpZWD
Hope this helps!

Hi jerrysarcastic, Thank you for your response, and good work!
The fact that you checked the actual uploaded file, even though it showed a 0.00 B file size in the Media library, was a tremendous help, and I know now that the upload was successful. I don’t have access to a newer version of MS Word. However, as long as I now know that uploading the PDFs I generated directly from MS Word 2007 is successful, it solves my problem.
