Uploaded image names?

When I upload an image that already exists it doesn’t overwrite but adds a number (1, 2, 3 etc) to the end. Even if I delete all the images and reupload it continues adding the numbers. This poses serious problems as I have 120 images in the theme I’m using. Any way to stop this rediculous convention?

WordPress purposely does not overwrite images. That is to keep people from accidentally uploading a new image with the same name as a different image and overwriting it.

All the information from our blogs is stored in databases and the way databases work is when you delete something, it is removed from display and “marked” for deletion. It is not immediately deleted. Deletion happens when the databases are “packed” and that is done on some schedule that only wordpress knows. If you delete an image and wait a day or so, I know that you can upload a new image with the same name and the number will not be put after the name – at least that has been my experience.

My question is, why are you re-uploading so many pictures? Once the images are uploaded they are available for any other post in the media library; it’s not necessary to have multiple copies of the same thing over and over again.

Cool, I’ll just wait a day and try again.

    1tess,
I’m a designer and am constantly editing and re-editing graphics. Maybe it’s a little obsessive but it’s part of my process. The funny thing is that I didn’t realize for about an hour and a half why the images weren’t showing up. It’s because the names were automatically changing without me being aware.

    Thanks!

The other thing to remember is that when you delete an image, and then upload a new version (either right away or after a couple days) the permalink to that image will change. In other words, say you uploaded an image in March of 2007, the permalink of that original image is going to be something like:

When you upload the replacement, it is going to be something like this:

All the links in your posts and pages are going to have to be edited to correct the URL’s.

    sirhoff,
Oh, I understand that. Endless revisions that no one else notices.
A tip about naming revisions, which works on my hard drive, my stuff for work, etc…
and will help with the re-uploads on your blog: name the image (or file), but include some sort of code for the date. That way you maintain a record, and sometimes the date (or time) helps to track an old version down. “congo-mask.1-9-09” then “congo-mask.1-9-09-2p”

Nevermind, you likely already know that.

I fiddle with the pictures on my blog, and their arrangement, but it is after all a cooking blog meant to be relaxing, so …

I figure once I get the design finalized it’ll pretty much stay that way until I decide to redesign down the road. Thanks for all the help. I do now see why it works this way.
