  Do WordPress templates not allow for images to be inserted anywhere on the homepage?

  No, what you initailly fill in is only for detecting and auto-responding to wp.ORG visitors who often come here instead of their own forum. And it’s a very new feature, still under development.

  And your blog’s URL is http://zkwriter.wordpress.com/ – without the rest, which is only accessible by you.

  You can insert an image in a post, in a page, in the sidebar, and in some templates the header as well. Check the FAQs and the Support info pages.
