uploaded images too large, how to re-size w/out starting over

I am not very familiar with image editing and did not realize my images were so large, I have 1057 images in my wordpress that need to be re-sized so that I am no longer at the 3GB upload limit. I tried to rescale the images but it is not giving me the option of deleting the original (I dont want to restore it, I just want the space back). Please help, I cannot delete and re-do a years worth of images on my blog.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

(psssst, don’t tell staff I said this but…why don’t you just register a new blog and upload your new photos to it, then hotlink them into your regular blog?)

There must be a way to re-size the images that have already been uploaded without using up more blog space. In my attempt to re-size images to free up blog space, all I did was use more space…there must be a way to free up space without deleting the images… It seems unreasonable that there isn’t

I’m not aware of any means available for resizing the images already uploaded into your Media Library so they occupy less space. You can try raincoaster’s idea or you can purchase a space upgrade.

Sorry, what’s unreasonable is your idea that “there must be a way to free up space without deleting the images”. It’s like saying you want to free up space in a bookcase without removing the books that are already there. As rain and tt suggested, you need more shelves…

thank you for your kind reply. It doesn’t seem so far fetched to think that, since I can re-size and have the option to restore to original, that I would also have the option to delete the original copy and only keep the re-sized one instead of having both, thereby freeing space. I just wanted to know if there was a way, but if there is no way to do so, then I am just going to re-upload everything properly sized.

It doesn’t seem far fetched to you because you’re not very familiar with the technicalities. When you upload an image, you send a copy of it for storage. Downsizing that image in the post editor doesn’t affect the stored original, it simply tells the browser to display it in reduced size: the original remains untouched, and the reduced version we see isn’t an extra copy that gets stored alongside the original. To continue my book analogy, inserting a downsized version of an image you have uploaded is like handing out a miniature photocopy of a book you’ve got: the photocopy doesn’t replace your book, nor is it added next to it.
