uploaded videos resized 4:3 to 16:9

    I uploaded a 1440×1080 video (4:3 / 1.333), and it becomes 1440×810 (16:9 / 1.777) – I can see this in the Media Library.
    I uploaded a 640×480 video (4:3 / 1.333), and it becomes 640×360 (16:9 / 1.777) – again I can see this in the Media Library.

    Obviously wordpress likes 16:9 rather than the 4:3 my camera produces.

    Is WordPress doing this by trimming the top and bottom or by resampling?

    Would it be better for me to turn the videos into 16:9 myself (eg add left/right bars or trim or resample) before uploading?
