Uploaders "crashing" while uploading large numbers Images

    Problems Uploading Images
I am trying to upload many (200-300) Images to a post. I have tried both uploaders, both seem to crash after a while.
The one accessible from the post, manages to upload 17-18 images then “dies” and doesn’t go any further.
The one accessible from the media tab, does better, but still eventually “dies” and doesn’t go any further.
Background, these are not huge files at around 200kb each, I am on a fibre broadband connection (80 download, 20 upload) , hard wired into the router, so isn’t a speed problem at my end. I am using latest version Firefox on a powerful Windows 7 64 bit PC.
I can manage to upload the files with multiple tries with the media tab uploader, but then the files are all mixed up in order, and I want them sequential.
    Would appreciate some help?

    Hi there,

When you say the upload “dies,” do you get a particular error message or see something happen on the screen? That will help me investigate the issue to see if something is happening on this end.

However, the most likely issue is a connection problem that pops up while you are uploading the images. You may want to try clearing your browser’s cache before you start the upload.

Also, if you do upload the images in batches, you can drag and drop them in the gallery editor to rearrange the order if needed: http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/#editing-a-gallery-or-slideshow

Please let me know if you have any questions about that!

    Hello,

When I say it dies, nothing in particular happens. There is no error message, and nothing happens on screen. Another way of describing it is that it just “hangs” tends to get to 98% of a particular picture and just stops, no further action takes place even if I leave it 20 minutes. This occurred on multiple occasions.

As to connection problem, sorry don’t think so, as I explained I am on a Fibre Broadband and am linked by gigabit ethernet cable to the router. If there is a problem re connection it must be at WordPress’s end – my site is hosted by yourselves.

It is really strange I found a way round it last night (that i would prefer not to do as it meant uploaded higher res than I wanted and changing the file naming). I was trying to upload relatively low res images (max 600 pixels on a side), if I switched to my normal (max 1024 on a side) it worked fine. Only other thing I changed was the way I let Lightroom name the Jpegs.

    Hi there,

Sorry, when I said connection problem I meant the connection between your computer and our servers — which could be happening at any point along the way (not necessarily an issue with your internet connection itself).

You mentioned that the upload would just hang on a particular picture. If you try to upload the same picture separately, does the upload finish? (I want to rule out the possibility that our uploader has a problem with the picture itself, rather than the batch uploading process.)

I’m glad you found a way around it for now, and I can take this information to our team to see if there’s a way we can improve the uploader so you don’t have to use a workaround.

Hello, it didn’t always hang on the same picture, but there was one that it hung on several times. Nothing special about the picture itself. Filename _D3S6840.jpg, and Lightroom resized it to max 600 pixels on the long edge, by 200 on the short edge. Filesize would be 158kB.
I tired uploading that picture on its own, that hung too.

Just to emphasize the way round it I found is something I would have prefered not to do, and I am not happy with the way round I found, but I had a wedding couple waiting for their pictures, and couldn’t wait for WordPress to sort its uploader out!

Thanks for the additional info. If you try renaming the photos but not changing the resolution, do the uploads work? Or are you only getting it to work if you also adjust the resolution?

Took a while been busy, but have done the testing you asked for.

When I changed the naming of the files (to Test-1,2,3 etc) and kept to 600 Longest edge, it appeared to stick at the 17th file (again). I noticed that when I went back to delete these test files, numbers 18,19,20, and 21 had uploaded, but 17 not. I left it for ages took very long for 18,19,20,21 to upload.

When I didn’t change the naming of the files (i.e. _D3S6773, etc.) but I changed to my standard resolution for WordPress, i.e. max 1024 by 1024 pixels. It was still going fine 30-40 into the upload – didn’t continue, as I have to go in and delete these test files 20 at a time with the Media editor.

So it looks like for some reason WordPress doesn’t like smaller files, i.e. max 600 pixels on long edge?

Would appreciate if this could be fixed, as it means I have to upload file sizes that mean my clients could print small prints without deterioration of quality, vs the 600 pixel max size I’d prefer.

Thanks for doing this testing! We haven’t been able to reproduce this problem, so it’s hard for us to pinpoint what exactly is going wrong so we can fix it. I just sent you an email about this — if you can send us a copy of that 17th file that wouldn’t upload, we can take a look and test it further on our end to see what might be going on. Please let me know if you don’t get that email from me. Thanks!

Hello have replied to your email. I attached the first 24 files of the series.

Thanks for sending me those files. I tried uploading all 24 files at once, and I was able to do it without any problems. I couldn’t see anything about the files that would cause the upload to hang.

A couple things you might want to try:

    1. Try downloading another browser and see if it works better there. You can find the latest versions of popular browsers here: http://browsehappy.com/

    2. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies to see if that helps the process.

Another approach, since you are able to upload the higher resolution files without problems, is to resize the photos once they are uploaded to your media library. That way you can still offer them at a lower resolution on your site.

Really happy for you that you had no problems. Fact is I do!
