Uploading a clickable image in the sidebar
-
Hi everyone,
I’d be very thankful for some clarification on how I can upload a clickable image in my sidebar (it is supposed to take one to another page). So far I have managed to get a picture in the sidebar through one of the widgets but it is just the link and is not clickable. I am a rookie in this blogging world and feel entirely lost.
Secondly, can I upload an image WITHOUT staring a post first? In FAQ under Put an image in your sidebar I am told to go to my Upload but how does the pic show up there without me having to start a post first?
Thanks in advance!

First, welcome to WordPress! Hope you enjoy your time blogging. :) To make an image clickable, you need to wrap the address around anchor tags. But doing that and dealing with code is a bit geeky and overwhelming for beginners, so I wouldn’t recommend it.
Really the simplest way is just to pretend you’re writing a post. You upload your image and it’ll appear in the editor. Then you need to find the link icon in your editor (#10 below); click it and paste the address for your page into the area and that will create the link. Then all you have to do is click the code tab, copy the text, and paste that into your text widget. And that’s it; you’re done.

http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/15/what-do-all-the-icons-mean/So if this is your blog and you want your Practically Creative image to link to practicallycreative.net, this is the text you’ll end up with.
<a href="http://practicallycreative.net/"><img src="http://practicallycreative.net/nancys/images/pcqlink3trans.gif" height="50" width="160" /></a>For your second question, as far as I know you need to start a new post to upload an image; I don’t think you can do it from Dashboard > Manage or anywhere else (I might be wrong; I haven’t tried). But really that’s to your advantage; otherwise you have to mess around with code later on and this is really much simpler. Hope that helps and here’s a link to some resources you might find useful as well. :)

just a note: when you upload a file on the Write page, you don’t have to save an empty post or page.
Think of it as going to the page where the the uploader is located rather than “starting a new post”

Thanks guys!
Writing in itself is fun but all the stuff around it quite frustrating at times. It took me more than an hour to format my first (and only so far!) little blog: it looked the way I wanted in the draft but came out completely “disturbed” in the published state. Fearing for my mental state I had to give up the ambition to make the text look the way I wanted and settled for the second (or third!) best.
Either way, THANKS for your replies, I will check this out later, rested and in a balanced frame of mind.
Cheers,

Cjwriter,
If you are reading this Thanks again for heling and giving the links to those beginner resources. I used this litlle image with the link to Practically Creative as an exercise and managed it thanks to you, NOT your intstructions :-) I followed your instructions and also double checked with the beginner resources but always ended up with a different from yours code in the code tab so the picture would show but would not link to the site. In the end I just copied your code and pasted it into the text widget et voilá! I have no clue why the code was wrong (in the beginning the picture would upload with black backgound while it sad it was to be trasparent!).

Glad to hear you got it working! Sounds like you were doing the right thing, so I’m sure next time you won’t have any problems; it was probably just a busy server or something. Have fun blogging. :)

cjwriter,
I like the look of the blog page you used as an example. What template did you use?

Do you mean the resources blog? That’s actually a blog which Timethief created and it uses MistyLook which is a very flexible theme. If you’d like to get a better idea of themes, Engtech’s reviews are an excellent resource. Highly recommended. :)
